http://www.mediaite.com/print/trump-when-i-said-punishment-i-meant-women-should-punish-themselves-for-abortion/by Alex Griswold
In a New York Times profile of Donald Trumps campaign, the candidate walked back his comments to MSNBCs Chris Matthews that women should receive some form of punishment if they seek an abortion, saying he actually wanted women to punish themselves.
I didnt mean punishment for women like prison, he said. Im saying women punish themselves. I didnt want people to think in terms of prison punishment. And because of that I walked it back.
But the Times reporter Robert Draper dug around and got the real story. Trump initially saw nothing wrong with his remark and refused to walk it back, and issued a short noncommittal statement. Trump suddenly changed his mind when he was swamped with questions and requests for comment from over a hundred media outlets.
He then turned to his ally New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and got his team to write another statement. The result was what the public saw: two separate statements with completely contradictory responses released within an hour of each other.

(21,946 posts)suit him? Most women who find they need one, do a lot of agonizing just making the decision.
Why are men presuming to tell women what to do and how to feel and how to act in a situation like this when in most cases, men are the reason the woman is pregnant in the first place.
Let's look at some of the men's responses to a pregnancy.
Some walk away and offer no support
Some rape then deny it
Some abuse the woman
Some let the woman know they won't be hired to a job if they are pregnant
Some have some choice words for a woman in that condition
Some have an attitude like Trump.
This is just some of the negative responses. I'm sure there are more.
There are many who are good husbands and men and offer their wives/girl companions lots of support. Those aren't the ones I'm including.

(21,691 posts)While some women "do a lot of agonizing" over the decision, the fact is, most women do not, nor do they regret their decision or have any negative sequelae because of it. Please do not perpetuate right-wing lies and hate speech. Thank you.

(1,339 posts)I had an abortion. I did not agonize over it and nor did I regret it for even a second. I did what had to be done. It was legal and I am not ashamed.
I know quite a few women who've had abortions and none of them are tortured with recriminations about their choice. They did what they had to do at a certain point in their lives, period the end. I am sure there are probably some religious women who agonize over their decision, but that's certainly not the case with most.

His handlers tell him that he did a bad thing, so he tries to walk it back.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
Can't the American public see that he'll say anything to pander to his base and try to get votes? How could anyone trust this man with the nuclear codes!!!
No because his supporters are the ones who act the way he does. Look at the tapes, look at the rally tapes, most men there are arrogant, cretin types who most likely are racist, wife (walk behind me) type jerks. The women are similar, racist , arrogant stepford wives that are just doing what their husbands want.
I got juried yesterday for saying something pertaining to the election, trump winning, dems who dont vote for the nominee get what they deserve, but seriously, do you want this guy in there.... (51,239 posts)The last Democratic candidate to promise to raise taxes if he was elected was Walter Mondale. Vice President Mondale lost all but one state, and Mondale didn't have albatrosses around his neck like never having worked as anything but a politician, getting evicted for stealing electricity from his landlord, being a deadbeat dad, honeymooning in the Soviet Union, flying to Nicaragua to apologize to an enemy of the United States for America's foreign policy, two trips to Cuba, having a wife that bankrupted a college, or working on the only Marxist kibbutz in all Israel.
The GOP also knows all that, and they'd use it against him. The race would be over in August.
Hillary has a long track record of going up against Republicans and winning. Bernie Sanders can't even win the state he was born in.

(745 posts)Polls right now mean nothing. The general campaign hasn't even started yet.
At this point in 2008 there were polls showing Obama and Mcain as a tight race and we all know how that turned out.
phazed0
(745 posts)That's an MSM talking point.
Egnever
(21,506 posts)in 92 for example in may polling was Clinton 25% bush 35%
in 2000 in april it was Bush 47 gore 41
in 2008 Obama was losing to Mcain , Obama 42% Mcain 48%
in 2012 Obama was losing to Romney... Obama 44% Romney 48%
Tell me again how may polling is in anyway indicative of where the election will end up.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_polling_for_U.S._Presidential_elections
phazed0
(745 posts)Then you prove 'a' point that the polls are reversed... of which the outcome would be Trump wins, correct?
I'm not claiming that polls are the end-all, that's ridiculous. However, it does give an indication of some magnitude. But to claim you have some barometer better than polling, please share... or tell the Hillary camp to stop using polling in their arguments here on DU... that would be a sight.
Egnever
(21,506 posts)but here is a much better barometer.
https://electionbettingodds.com/
That is people putting their money where there mouth is and those markets have been more accurate than the polls. When those odds get close then I will reconsider Trumps chances of winning but as it stands I am going with the money.

Face it, you can't take dissent or the fact that your candidate is embroiled in scandle and the plutocrats money and is likely to lose to Trump. Turn a blind eye, put your head in the sand - very Democratic. Turn a blind eye to the blatent theft of this Democracy, on show at the Nevada convention. Ya, you are the real Democrat here.

SunSeeker
(53,333 posts)Sanders is losing badly to Hillary Clinton. He is not and never was the Democratic front-runner.
Hillary has over 3 million more votes than Sanders. Hillary has 2,297 delegates, only 86 delegates away from the 2,383 needed to clinch the nomination. Sanders needs TEN TIMES that, or 856 delegates to get the nomination, since he only has 1,527 delegates.

Are you purposely daft or is it built in? Hooray for corruption! Yay! Ram Democratic decisions down everyone's throat without a vote! Yay, corruption! Take gobs of money from the very people this site was against just 4-8 years ago. Yay corruption!
You never post up about the Hillary issues.. I wonder why that is? Probably because there are no good answers without shattering your "perfect Hillary" worldview. Have at it Haas. Brilliant strategy BTW for winning over Sanders supporters, well played!

(7,529 posts)Romney would have made life so miserable for undocumented people that they would self-deport.
Now Trump comes along and would make the life so miserable for a woman that got pregnant from a rape that the rape wasn't punishment enough so they would punish themselves. Obviously, that punishment would be to force them to carry the fetus to term. How else could a woman that just learned that she is pregnant punish themselves? It makes no sense. Besides, that is government imposed punishment and not some undefined self punishment. So, Donald, give us an example of what you are talking about and how you would make it come to pass. Frankly, I think it is just more bloviating.
