Lawmakers in Oklahoma approved a bill Thursday that would make performing abortions a felony and revoke the medical licenses of any physician who assists in such a procedure.
This sweeping measure, which opponents have described as unconstitutional and unprecedented, was sent to Gov. Mary Fallin (R) for her signature.
Fallin has five days to decide whether to sign the bill, and her office did not immediately respond to a request Thursday about her plans.
The Oklahoma bill is the first such measure of its kind, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights, which says that other states seeking to ban abortion have simply banned the procedure rather than attaching penalties like this.
According to the bill, a person who performs or induces an abortion will be guilty of a felony and punished with between one and three years in the state penitentiary.
This legislation also says that any physician who participates in an abortion will be prohibited from obtaining or renewing a license to practice medicine in this state. However, medical licenses will not be stripped from doctors who perform abortions deemed necessary to save the mothers life.

(1,587 posts)unconstitutional, but it's an election year and the "lawmakers" who are for this bill can tell their
constituents that they tried. Though they will righteously fuck over everyone in every other way, they're
trying to "save the babies".

(1,182 posts)Is an arrogant evangelical moron, and likely to sign the bill, thus costing the bankrupt state even more money in legal fees than they have already wasted fighting the EPA on behalf of the oil barons who own the place. The stupid legislature cut taxes for rich people and now faces a billion plus shortfall. So they are cutting education, social services, raising fees on car tags, licenses, etc. Typical republican purposeful mismanagement driven by ideological hatred of the poor. "If thou shalt not work then thou shalt not eat" .. real Old Testament stuff.

(281 posts)over rule the states? Did they forget about 1973 Roe vs wade? After 26 weeks it is then up to the states to determine if an abortion can be done. I know I read that.
In any event this will never hold up just in any court of law. I'm so tired of this

(53,921 posts)They spend time "debating" something which is clearly unconstitutional and will immediately be challenged in court. Then our money goes down the drain on fucking stupid court battles over something which should have never seen the light of day! Like many of the anti-GLBT bills being "mulled", this is just another "shot across the bow" reminder of things to come if republicans seize even more control of this country!! So for all those people "not concerned" about LGBT rights, women's rights...just wait...they'll come for you too!
