Repubs started using this as a dis, and emphasizing "rat" at the end. Dems should have never given it credence. PLUS, it's bad grammar---using a noun as an adjective (modifier).

conservatives 200 years ago called the new Republican Party (the liberals of those days) democrats as a slur. So they started calling themselves the Democratic-Republican party and wore it proudly, then later we continued on as the Democratic Party and wear it more proudly still.

And here we are again. It's really pretty funny!

Btw, I honestly only recently learned "democrat" was supposed to be a slur. I always figured it was proud anti-education nonsense like "nucular."

liberal, I am of course all too familiar with the villification of that term, also watching its tremendous success. To this day, polls that rely on self-identification by liberals (most) are by definition inaccurate and conservatives seem to feel hat handing the nuclear codes to a nutcase no one knows is actually conservative is safer than to an avowed liberal.

They already turned liberal into a label with bad connotation and now they're trying to do it with the word Democrat. Keep giving them slack and attacking those of us defending the name and you've become an ally in their assault. Language, in case you don't know it, is very powerful and the right-wing has been scoring victories after victories: pro-life, death-tax, socialize medicine, and so on. It lets them frame the arguments and those people they despise. Why roll over on another one?

and thus try to to stigmatized the party and it's members as rats. It's a strategy from Frank Luntz, their linguistic expert. They've already use the word liberal as a smear; you want them to include Democrat it there too? That's why we complain. Language can be a powerful weapon to smear and demonize; we can't let them keep using it against us.

The ungrammatical conversion of the noun "Democrat" to an adjective was the brainchild of Republican partisans, presumably an attempt to deny the opposing party the claim to being "democratic" -- or in the words of New Yorker magazine senior editor Hendrik Hertzberg, "to deny the enemy the positive connotations of its chosen appellation." In the early 1990s, apparently due largely to the urging of then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) and Republican pollster Frank Luntz, the use of the word "Democrat" as an adjective became near-universal among Republicans.

First of all, it is a pretty minor offense. I don't think we need to make "Democrat" almost a bad word when used as an adjective. Not to mention, I have occasionally heard even some very good Democrats slip when speaking about some issue or other.

Second, for the most part, it signals that you should consider the talking head as potentially leaning right.

Third, making this a big issue makes us look silly -- as it really does not deserve the level of anger that you seem to have.

here's a nice write up of why the right adopted this usage.

And my two cents: every time a talking head uses it inappropriately we should refer to the GOP as the Publican party.
