New research shows some adults who never had ADHD as kids are developing it now

In the 1970s, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was considered a childhood disorder that went away in adolescence or early adulthood. It later became clear that the symptoms persist in some adults, changing the way we think about the disorder. Still, for adults to be diagnosed and get treatment for ADHD, they must have shown symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity, or inattention before age 12.

New research is challenging these beliefs.

A pair of studies published this week in JAMA Psychiatry have identified large groups of people who never had ADHD symptoms as children but developed the disorder as adults.

In a UK study, researchers at King’s College in London found that nearly 70% of more than 2,200 18-year-old twins with ADHD did not meet the criteria for the disorder during any of four earlier assessments at ages 5, 7, 10, and 12.

Where a person could have coped with the job as they learned it, but more and more was added to it and completion times cut and cut and the coping was over. I could have stayed at my job for another 10 years and I was hoping to go to 75, but for the first 15 years the work was about the same and I had no problem with it and was one of the best in my field. But more and more kept getting added to it to the point where I had to retire, I just could no longer learn the new things that I did not need anyway for my job.

That may be showing up that people just have reached the point of not being able to grasp new things as quick as others.

computers/digital devices.
Speed AND volume. Not having enough cognitive filtering capacity.
The amount of incoming information is overwhelming and processing it and finding a way
to anchor it in the physical/emotional body is problematic. It's like an addiction to drugs or speed
with similar withdrawal issues as well.

Not the full explanation perhaps, but I'll bet it's a big part of the problem.

When I get home from work, all I want to do is get away from all the stimulation and simultaious multiple inputs. Probably why I drink more than I should.
