(13,582 posts)the Braves. I think they even worked with the area native American tribe on graphics and the new logo. No one objected much. The school had only been there for ten or 12 years anyway.

(1,683 posts)The team was created in Boston which at the time had two baseball teams, the Red Sox and the Braves (now Atlanta). To capitalize on the two established names, the upstart NFL team in called themselves the Boston Redskins. Later the team was moved to Washington as it was having trouble financially in Boston.

(72,790 posts)I would support a change in the nickname if Native Americans voted for a name change. I feel it should be up to them to make that decision.

My High School used Redmen as the sports logo when I attended, a name which subsequently was deemed non-politically correct and was changed to "Big Red" with the accompanying Indian head logo being retired.
The college that I attended for a masters degree also had an Indian name & logo when I went there, which was simply the name of a tribe, "Hurons" which was not in the least bit offensive, but which also fell by the politically correct wayside a number of years ago and was replaced with "Eagles".
Somewhat ironically, the college that I attended for undergrad continues to have the same name & logo for their athletics that they have always had, "Britons", apparently names derived from Celtic tribes are exempt from cultural sensitivity.
