CAIRO (AP) A Muslim mob stripped an elderly Christian woman and paraded her naked on the streets in an attack last week in which seven Christian homes were also ransacked and torched in a province south of the Egyptian capital.
According to the local Orthodox Coptic church and security officials, the assault in the Minya province village of Karama on Friday began after rumors spread that the elderly woman's son had an affair with a Muslim woman a taboo in conservative Egypt.
Police have arrested six men suspected of taking part in the violence and are looking for 12 more, the security officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Anba Makarios, Minya's top Christian cleric, told a talk show host on the private Dream TV network that the 70-year-old woman was dragged out of her home by the mob who beat her and insulted her before they stripped her off her clothes and forced her to walk through the streets as they chanted Allahu Akbar, or "God is great."

I'm sure there is a lot more reasons, but religion is the most profoundly inciteful of them.
Why do we "need to understand why they did this"?
Cant we just call it wrong because it's wrong and there are no defensible reasons why it would be ok?

(35,300 posts)That allows predictions, it allows ways of arguing against it or minimizing it.
In other words, it does what knowledge and understanding, instead of knee-jerk outrage and judgmentalism, usually achieve.
Now, in the end the argumentation and ways of mitigating such reprehensible behavior may fail. But the alternative is to rush to judgment and, ultimately, violence.
I needed to use the word "reprehensible," of course, just to avoid being accused (wrongly) of siding with Those We Dare Not Call Muslims (but who call themselves Muslims with pride). Fine line to walk, there, between a hanging-judge Charybdis and Judge Lynch Scylla.

(1,565 posts)Yes I have judged the ACTIONS of the individuals that did this:
Parading someone naked through the streets is always wrong in my view and there are no mitigating facts that would change that.
I am sadden by events like this and I am not advocating violence in any way.
Striving to understand why they did what they did is a noble goal and could lead to better understanding but regardless I believe their actions deserve to be condemned and the reasons why don't change that.
