The National Weather Service says a tornado that damaged or destroyed about 20 homes near the northeast Kansas town of Chapman was an EF4 with estimated peak winds of 180 mph.
Weather service surveyors determined the tornado started at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday and stayed on the ground for 26 miles before ending around 8:40 p.m. Kansas officials said Thursday numerous power lines and a set of railroad tracks were damaged in the storm.
The twister passed just south of Chapman, a community of 1,400 that in 2008 lost more than 60 homes and had several school buildings and churches damaged by a similar-sized tornado that cut through the heart of the town.

(18,864 posts)One bad thunderstorm after another. Tornado sirens were on earlier but I don't think one ever put down anywhere.
I hate this stuff with a passion.

It's just so sopping wet. One thunderstorm after another and thunder all day. My dogs are afraid in storms so they have spent the day in their crates coveted up with blankets.
I will be so glad when this pattern stops.

(18,864 posts)Thete was a terrible one hit Ruskin Heights way back when
But we occasionally have a small one put down here in town and do a little damage. A car dealership close to me got hit and it damaged a lot of cars. Sometimes they just dip down and then go right back up again.
It's not flat where I live. It's really hilly and that helps . But just north of me it is flat with a lot of newer subdivisions and they have gotten hit. A few houses were damaged but no one was hurt.
