It caught my eye immediately.

On further research, apparently the spelling on the map is an acceptable alternative, but it doesn't look right, not to someone who is a fiend about correct spelling.

maybe it is a paint- thing, but thought both were okeedokeeeeeeeeee?

4. In American English gray is the usual spelling.

In England it's grey. But as far as I'm concerned both are equally valid. As are variants like color/colour. The second one isn't wrong, it's just not the one we use here.
