So Trump called Elizabeth Warren "Pocahontas" at a press conference. That is a slur on Native Americans and reduces them to a caricature. He is called out on it by a Native American reporter and repeats it again. He thinks he is insulting the senator but he is insulting Native Americans.
Idiot...

(51,129 posts)Donald Trump repeatedly mocked Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., as Pocahontas at a press conference in North Dakota on Thursday, even as a Native American woman present at the event interrupted to call his comments offensive.
Thats very offensive. Sorry, the woman said.
Is that offensive? You tell me, Trump asked.
The woman replied that she was offended, and Trump quickly repeated the phrase.
Oh, oh really oh, Im sorry about that, Trump said before turning to a reporter who had asked about Warren, immediately using the term again. Pocahontas. Is that what you said? .....

(46,009 posts)She was not allowed to remain a Native American in her community, but claimed by the English settlers who in turn indoctrinated her to Christianity, English manners and behavior, and gave her no avenue to return to her original community.
All that's left is elementary school legend that she saved Captain John Smith's life by putting her life before his. And that made her a "good" Indian.
I'm surprised by the silence of the Native American communities. When Trump attacks one, he attacks them all.

(1,739 posts)What is even worse is. she was a preteen or teen. not the voluptuous young woman in folklore. She was a minor. The Native American community is still fighting the redskins crap. Trump is inconsequential in my book. Bigger fish to fry. Sometimes letting someones words stand for themselves is quite enough.

(28,394 posts)This is from wikipedia:
At the time Pocahontas was born, it was common for Powhatan Native Americans to be given several personal names, have more than one name at the same time, have secret names that only a select few knew, and to change their names on important occasions. Bestowed at different times, the names carried different meanings and might be used in different contexts.[13] Pocahontas was no different. Early in her life she was given a secret name, Matoaka, but later she was also known as Amonute. Matoaka means "Bright Stream Between the Hills"; Amonute cannot be translated.[14][15]
The name Pocahontas was a childhood nickname that probably referred to her frolicsome nature; according to the colonist William Strachey, it meant "little wanton",[16] some interpret the meaning as "playful one".[12] The 18th-century historian William Stith claimed that "her real name, it seems, was originally Matoax, which the Indians carefully concealed from the English and changed it to Pocahontas, out of a superstitious fear, lest they, by the knowledge of her true name, should be enabled to do her some hurt."[17] According to the anthropologist Helen C. Rountree, Pocahontas "revealed [her secret name] to the English only after she had taken another religiousbaptismalname, Rebecca".[18]
Pocahontas's Christian name, Rebecca, may have been a symbolic gesture to Rebecca of the Book of Genesis who, as the mother of Jacob and Esau, was the mother of two "nations", or distinct peoples. Pocahontas, as a Powhatan marrying an Englishman, may have been seen by herself and by her contemporaries as being also, potentially, the mother of two nations.[19]

(6,324 posts)As a person with Native American blood it disgusts me to no end. But detaching myself I see what he is doing.
He knows her history with the claims of Cherokee ancestry and the appearance she used that to get an advantage are a weak spot for her. He knows the general public, and especially anyone who would ever vote for him, doesn't see it as an insult in the context we do.
He is trying to cut her off at the knees by using an insult that he knows will bring controversy but will at the same time draw just as much attention to her problematic history. She can't directly respond without also having to talk about that again- something that's not in her best interests.
It taps right into right wing white male hatred of affirmative action and minorities and it's a "safe" target to do it since her claims are disputed. "I wasn't making fun of a real Native American, just a faker who pretended to be one to get an unfair advantage".
And by showing he is willing to go there and make it an issue he also is throwing a preemptive attack to show Hillary or Bernie that if she gets to be a VP candidate he will use this to make them think twice.
Kingofalldems
(38,419 posts)That's what I am reading.
That quote you have in paragraph 4, is that from Trump? Or did you put it there?
You say her claims are disputed. By whom I might ask?
Lee-Lee
(6,324 posts)Yes, in the overall picture it's good for him I think. Nobody offended by it was voting for him anyway, and it attacks her credibility. He stands to lose nothing and discredit a person outspoken against him.
As for it being disputed- Google "Elizabeth Warren Cherokee" and you will read tons. One person when it first came out did an article claiming her claims to Cherokee ancestry had merit but later withdrew that when it was discovered the documents being cited as proof couldn't be produced and were never seen. She has been unable to name any ancestor that is Cherokee but claims that "family lore" is enough to back her claim up.
Except that every other white person you meet when they learn you are Native always has that "family lore" about the "Indian princess" somebody married so they have Native blood too- to the point where it's almost funny if it wasn't so sad. And here in the east almost always Cherokee.
What certain is that she isn't enrolled in any of the 3 Cherokee nations and she does not not do they have any evidence that would prove sufficient for them to allow enrollment. She cannot be legally classified as a member of any Cherokee nation and none of them have any evidence in their well documented archives of anyone in her family being Cherokee. None of that is in dispute. Ask any of the 3 Cherokee nations and they will tell you Elizabeth Warren is not, by thier standards, Cherokee.
Now, is it possible she has some Cherokee way, way back many generations? Sure. But her history is known far enough back that if she does it's such a small degree she isn't eligible for tribal membership. But that is possible for anyone if you history is unknown way far back. If you going to claim it, especially in the ways she did where she was recognized for her accomplishments as a Native American, you should be able to document it more than "'my granny told me". That would be like a white person whose DNA test showed 3% African ancestry demanding to be eligible for scholarships for African Americans- at that point your just white and need to accept your whiteness.
Kingofalldems
(38,419 posts)What about the quote-- is that directly from Trump? Or from you?
Lee-Lee
(6,324 posts)That is all.
And as far as family lore- the whole issue is one of her alternating between listing herself as white or as Native American based on nothing but family lore. By that standard every white person out there can become a minority whenever it suits them and be white whenever it suits them.
I know here in western NC the EBCI enrolled members I know all have very strong feelings on the matter and none of them have anything good to say about her claims. Heck, as a person of Lumbee descent they don't even consider me a true Native because the origins of the Lumbee people are disputed by some.
