What was I thinking? Of course I'll nitpick. This is DU.

Anyway, I think of Memorial Day as a time for reflection rather than for happiness. I never go out and hit the malls for the bargains, etc. I was horrified years ago when one of my brothers wanted to go look at cars.

Please have a reflective Memorial Day.

Best wishes.

I'll spend the weekend remembering my Dad and my uncles who all served in WWII. Plus the women that I know who did (even the ones who are not gone in body) like my Mom.

Suicide In The Trenches

I knew a simple soldier boy
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go...

1st Lt. Siegfried Sassoon

Very moving.

All war is hell, but WW1 really was a special hell for the soldiers, the nurses, the horses, the civilians. Reading about the hubris of those generals on either side makes one shudder.

I wonder if they ever felt any guilt?
