They just finished refitting the gully to the east of my house. Standing water in street is higher than last time. Stay safe everyone.

(68,918 posts)hours again. My pool couldn't keep up and went over the coping. I was grateful they didn't call school today. My kid's got 1 day left before graduation next week.

(29,414 posts)It's about to get real. We had a taste of it an hour ago, and now the deluge is about to hit.
This seems to be our default method of getting rain this year. Not a scattering of typical afternoon thunderstorms anymore. Now it's a massive line of torrential downpour storms at a time.

(68,918 posts)I've never seen the water come up as high in the neighborhood. They didn't finish the gully, so I'm imagining that is the reason.

(29,414 posts)but it also depends on how much the nearest bayou can handle, too. Most of the area's bayous drain into the Ship Channel, which is, for the most part, just the lower end of Buffalo Bayou. It takes a while for all of that water to drain then into Galveston Bay.
We now seem to be in a major "wet season" so work on your gully may get delayed until things dry out. Because the ground has to be able to hold its shape while it's being dredged and sloped. Do you know if it's going to be a concrete gully or if they're going to let it remain "natural"? The latter has the advantage of at least allowing for some soaking in of runoff. They've been trying to restore much of Buffalo Bayou to the same natural state for that very reason. The other bayous will take much more work to restore that way.
Well, it's really coming down now. Thankfully, I live in a relatively high part of the area, and am at least a mile from each of the nearest bayous (Sims and Braes) so no flooding other than minor street flooding and pasture flooding out back. I hope your flooding remains low and doesn't decide to invade

(29,414 posts)Spring Creek is being forecast to be nine feet over flood stage:
If you use Weather Underground's WunderMap, you can set it to show you all of the hydrological data on the bayous, creeks, and rivers of the area. It's an excellent tool for keeping ahead of local flooding.
