While President Obama calls for a reduction in nuclear weapons at Hiroshima, Donald Trump entertained the idea of using nuclear weapons against ISIS as a way gaining their respect.

In an interview with Mark Halperin and John Heilemann of Bloomberg, the Republican presidential frontrunner refused to rule out using tactical nuclear weapons in the war against ISIS.
Im never going to rule anything outI wouldnt want to say. Even if I wasnt, I wouldnt want to tell you that because at a minimum, I want them to think maybe we would use them, he said.
Trump also said hes open to tactics like waterboarding and monitoring American mosques in the fight. He also talked about respect, which he sees as one of the biggest problems facing the US right now.

They have to respect us, Trump said in the interview. They do not respect us at all and frankly they dont respect a lot of things that are happeningnot only our country, but they dont respect other things.

(17,493 posts)If you ever have to use them they have failed their purpose. But in order to be a real deterrent your enemies have to believe you are willing to use them if they attack you with similar weapons of mass destruction. If your enemies have nuclear weapons you have to know that they will use them if you attack them first with yours. The whole damn concept is appropriately named MADD.
But Trump should understand that using nukes on ISIS is like killing a mosquito with a 12 gauge shotgun. It's overkill and it's unnecessary.

(46,038 posts)ISIS is a death cult. To die in the name of their version of Islam is to transported to Paradise. So there is no fear of death.
Nukes are a deterrent to those who prefer to live rather than die.
The issue isn't "respect" for the U.S.
