Chavez wanted to restore Gran Colombia and achieve Bolivar's vision. And restore the greatness that Chavez saw then (in a territory that was united by imperialist Spain and whose unity was inherited upon decolonialization--enjoy the fruits of imperialism while saying you're anti-imperialism is a standard trope; Lenin, Mao, even modern Arabists employ it, but the US is exceptional in that it's often the only country called out for it).
