Rain pummels France; Seine overflows its banks in Paris

PARIS (AP) — Floods devastated regions across France on Wednesday — in some areas, the worst seen in a century or more. The Seine River overflowed its banks, one French town was evacuated, travelers trapped on a submerged highway were rescued by soldiers and boat cruises in Paris were cancelled.

Meteorologists said more bad news is coming — the waters are expected to keep rising for days.

1. Yup, it's rainy, wet and sloppy. I've never seen the Seine this high

The Seine is at epic heights, and has risen up over the roadways and walks along the river. It's pretty bad, and has totally ruined Roland Garros for the first time in decades (the reason I'm here).

I'm scheduled for the train tomorrow, and am hoping it's going to go along ok! A lot of people are having a much worse time further south of Paris, it's pretty relentless. It's not heavy rain, just relentless. We had a break today, but stuck in fog and clouds. It's supposed to return tomorrow.

Here's What Caused the Deadly Floods in Germany and France
Tom Moore
Published: June 1, 2016

A pair of European countries were swamped this week by an atmospheric phenomenon that was responsible for widespread flooding.

The slow-moving storm system, which at times produced extremely intense and record-breaking rainfall, resulted in major flooding across parts of France and Germany. Portions of northeast France (near the border with Belgium) received six full weeks of rain in just a 24-hour period during the multi-day event.

Setup For Extreme Rain

Extreme weather conditions are often produced by a blocking pattern at the jet stream level. The weather over much of the past week across western Europe has been influenced by a phenomenon known as an "omega block."

In this case, a massive high-pressure ridge aloft (bulge in the jet stream) built northward across the eastern North Atlantic and stretched from just east of Greenland to Scandinavia.

8. Germany hit really hard this weekend, too. See this flash flood video...

Four dead and people still missing from that awful rush of water.

Watching that video reminded me of the tsunami that hit after the earthquake in Japan...and about a two second clip of it was all that CNN deemed important enough in their all Trump/all the time news coverage. If you hadn't put up this article, I'd guess many would never know about the floods happening in Europe.

More heavy downpours are forecast across a swathe of northern Europe after days of flooding left at least 10 dead and others missing.

In the worst incident, the bodies of three women from the same family were found in a flooded basement in southern Germany.
...
Thousands left their homes in France, with about 10,000 emergency calls made.

Heavy showers are forecast right through the weekend across a band of central Europe from France to Ukraine, with as much as 50mm (2in) of rain falling in some parts in just a few hours.
