I don't understand how in the hell Donald Trump is the Republican nominee.

The Establishment loathes him. The donors hate him for taking away their influence. And the grassroots right-wing activists would rather have someone reliably ultraconservative like Ted Cruz.

And yet...the Republican Party (with the Speaker of the House and nominal leader of the party) is lining up from top-to-bottom to endorse this unbelievably shameless narcissistic clown - a man who has no loyalty to any party, anyone, or anything other than his own brand (which for some reason, a lot of people seem to equate with him being a business genius. I guess it is pretty shrewd to waste other people's money in a series of comically bad investments and bankruptcies...).

What's the deal? Are we really this far down the rabbit hole? This is truly surreal.

Many people seem fed up with control of their lives zigzagging between Pub and Pub Lite and neither doing much of anything good, let alone great, for a majority of Americans. And, whereas the Republicans seemed to be more Stepford than Democrats (at least if Will Rogers is to be believed), that seems to have changed. They are no longer willing to vote as their Party's leaders, talking heads, etc. direct, while Democrats are--or so it would seem, anyway.

when they tried to attack him the media would not cover or support their attacks but instead covered Trump's come backs and insults in great detail.

For example when Cruz won Iowa he didn't get a bounce, instead the media CUT his coverage in the days following and gave the momentum to 3rd place Rubio, nor did the media ever cover Cruz as the first Hispanic to ever win a primary, etc., throughout the primary it was like that, 2 billion dollars of media covering Trump as the leader of all things.

Whether he was calling Carson a pathological child molester, or taking out Jeb Bush, or attacking Cruz's wife, the media was always selling Trump, or more accurately, just asking Trump to sell himself, if you go back and look at all the interviews, it was Trump handling the entire interview as a personal advertisement, while the interviewers just nodded.

Trump alone could not manage to diminish so many major American figures in the primary, in party politics, in the media, and everywhere, unless he had the media helping him, he never even had to buy ads, he could wake up and call in from his bed, and win the day, everyday.

Gave them all unforgettable nicknames on the way out. To see the Bush family humiliated was particularly sweet. Low energy Jeb - unforgettable.

I suspect those lining up don't have much of a choice. The religious base of the party has been made irrelevant for a number of reasons and big business will support whichever party wins.

They now have a rabid meat eating base that can be easily turned on the party establishment, since they have lost control.

Hopefully it's truely misunderstanding for you. A lot of people running campaigns are in denial rather than simply not understanding, and that needs to change. Not sue if it's allowed here but blog.dilbert.com.

yes, the dilbert comic strip, but a good blog on "persuasion" and Trump's a "master" and Hillary and her campaign are not and Adams makes good arguements that have played out as he predicted throughout the primaries. He claims to be neutral but don't read it if you may be offended by pro-Trump blogs and I hope I'm not alerted for posting - this seems to be an relevent to the OP.

It's also a backlash against a black presidency. All of tRump's supporters are the same Neanderthals (my apologies to Neanderthals) who hate and talk shit about President Obama and his family. They see this as "Make(ing) America Great Again", to put the whitest, most racist, most foul-mouthed, most vile piece of shit they could find at the head of their miserable party.

This thing is scary as hell. Nothing like it has ever turned out well anywhere in the world. Ever.

Thu Jun 2, 2016, 08:46 PM

On the down line, all of the prattling sockpuppets in suits. What was on their lips? The same old glib shit - tax cuts, liberals bad, Obama evil, Hillary worse and RonaldReaganRonaldReaganRonaldReagan. And the more their lips flapped, the more obvious their desperation became - their desperation to cover up the simple and unavoidable fact that things don't work for most people anymore.

On the up line, tens of millions of people, long since envenomated by conservative "thinking" representing the full spectrum from wishful to magical. They've had 30 years or more to absorb the hate, the pus, the idiocy. And all this time they've been told they're special, they've been reassured that they're The Real Americans, and their paranoia has been lovingly nurtured and fed and cossetted. They, too, have realized that things don't work anymore, and they've finally realized that the sockpuppets have had a big part in bringing this unfortunate reality to fruition.

Enter Trump. He doesn't have "policy", he doesn't have "ideas", he doesn't have "positions". What he has are short, simple sentences, promises to make aw the boo-boos better, and lots and lots of people to blame. He has what lots of people want - simple answers to complex problems, and a license to hate. And since Teh Stupid is all Teh Stupid have left to work with, he's their guy.

He's too stupid and the lies are too blatant for him to get away with it with a majority of voters (I hope!). However, a marginally more skilled demagogue would have a better chance to make the scam work.

For years the ordinary bigots have been expecting a cut of the spoils in return for their votes. Too bad. The loot has all gone to the politicians and their paymasters. The fools have finally figured out that they've been played.

But do you think they're going to join up with that other party with all its minorities and gun haters? Think again. That's who they hate.

So who does that leave? Hmmm...
