Young people will not remember Ali in his time, but what he did for justice in America...what he said about the Vietnam war...what he embodied as a fighter, should be taught on every playground and in every school textbook in every classroom across the country. Goodnight, Muhammad.

(10,539 posts)avoided the war as the boxing Champ if he played along, or served some USO function like many celebrities did.
He was the first to really develop the head game in boxing and it served him well against George Foreman. He could fluster and tie Howard Cossell in knots, and turn around and whup whoever was in the ring against him.

A man who taught us how to love all mankind and who never took shit from anybody.

(115,379 posts)I was a freshman or sophomore in HS in the early Sixties and I was in the library at school and was reading the Louisville Courier Journal sports page and read about this young boxer named Cassius Marcellus Clay out of Louisville that was getting ready for the Golden Gloves. He was 17 years old at the time.
