Natalie Maines' controversial comments about George W. Bush back in 2003 could've ended her country music career, but the singer and band-mates Emily Robison and Martie Maguire aren't about to stop using their stage as a platform. Just last night the Texas-based trio kicked off their DCX MMXVI World Tour in Cincinnati and made it they've got a new political foe: Donald Trump.
The Dixie Chicks performed their 1999 hit "Goodbye Earl" against a background that showed Trump with devil horns and a comical mustache and goatee.

(15,936 posts)Really, controversial comments: Just so you know, were on the good side with yall. We do not want this war, this violence, and were ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas.
What is soooo controversial about what Natalie said? Short answer absolutely nothing. The "news" media created the controversy, as they are prone to do.
The comment about United States President George W. Bush, who had served as the 46th governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000 before his election to the presidency, was reported in The Guardian's review of the Chicks concert. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. media picked up the story and controversy erupted.
Just a couple of headlines:
CNN.com - Dixie Chicks pulled from air after bashing Bush - Mar. 14
POLITICO - Former Dixie Chick: No regrets on Bush slam
As we are all so aware of the media creates the narrative when it comes to who to hate on.

(15,936 posts)however, since the media is controlled by mostly conservative elites, everything changed in '08.
President Obama has had to endure crap from the legislative branch, the extreme right news media, to everyday people. Trashing the Office of the President became the "hip" thing to do. As soon as a repub claims the reins again it will be a very bad thing to criticize the president once again!

(4,742 posts)I saw the show at Blossom last night in Akron. While I did see the above image of Trump it was literally a split second still shot in a montage of gangsters. If you blinked you missed it.

(4,742 posts)I will come clean and say that before 2003 I really wasn't a Dixie Chicks (or country music) fan. So I really didn't know much of their music. I went to the show because I manage a country radio station now AND because I really support the Chicks from the 2003 debacle. Natalie Maines is very liberal and from Texas. Who couldn't love that?
As for music, it was a thoroughly enjoyable show. I would say the first half was more mainstream music but the second half they did a lot more acoustic with bluegrass, rockabilly, etc. Overall it was good.

(27,995 posts)I'm actually glad that they didn't make him the focus of the performance. He probably would revel in that.
I envy you, I'd love to see them in concert!

(4,742 posts)...it was a 1/2 second clip. That's it.
Nothing else was political or controversial. Great show.

(34,582 posts)is the best place I have ever seen a concert. I saw the Allman Brothers there around 1990 or so.

(4,742 posts)I've seen shows all over the US...Madison Square, Merryweather Post Pavilion, Red Rocks (which is awesome), etc. But Blossom Music Center is really a gem. Plus I live 15 minutes away.
I'd rather sit on the lawn as the sound is better than in the pavilion. However pavilion seats are great in case it rains.
I think I also saw the Allman Brothers in the early 90s. Maybe the same show?

(34,582 posts)I moved from Cleveland to Fort Worth in 92. I saw a lot of good shows when I lived in Cleveland. I wish I could remember, though, which one I saw at Richfield Coliseum.

(4,742 posts)Well I saw a lot of Cavs games there first of all. My first concert was a Metallica show around 1990. I think my second concert ever was Def Leppard/Ratt with Lasers. Saw the Eagles there with Joe Walsh. Moody Blues. Sting. Bon Jovi. And I'm sure many I don't remember.
