OK, they're wanting $2,295 by the 15th (plus the $1,095 I'm paying today.)
I'm Terry. I'm a disabled vet living on a fixed income. I'm considered unemployable and not able to get a job. Along with myself, the family consists of my wife, two sons, a dog, a cat, and two rabbits.
I had some large medical (that were not covered by the VA or CHAMPVA) and other bills recently, and because of those my budget was totally shot. I ended up missing my mortgage payment in March. In an attempt to make back the money, I made some investments using April's benefits. I thought I was being safe. I invested in two different things, both of which I had researched. When I was getting ready to withdraw my money to pay the mortgage for March and April, both investments scammed out within a day of each other. I've been using my banks overdraft protection to pay the mortgage, bills, and to buy food for the family and pets. With the $33 per overdraft charge, that really adds up.
It's the 4th of June, and because of the previous overdrafts being taken out of my check on the 1st, I only had about $700 to work with for the whole month. I had to use the overdraft protection to pay the mortgage this month, so I'm now $1,300 in the red and don't get any money until July 1st. $1,300 is beyond the limit, which means I can't even use the overdraft protection this month to feed the family.
The money will be used to buy food for the family and pets, and pay the utilities, which are coming up this week. I normally handle the bills well every month, this is just a spiral caused by the huge medical bills. If I can get a positive balance into my account, I can turn this around. Any donations, not matter how small, or any shares would be appreciated.

(13,776 posts)I've found a few links that might be helpful:
http://nvf.org/veteran-resources/
The National Veterans Foundation is at 1-888-777-4443; maybe they know about programs or sources of funding in your area.

The name of this website sounds a little suspicious, but they actually aren't selling anything and it looks like a genuinely helpful list:

You can find a Community Action Association near you here: http://www.communityactionpartnership.com/index.php?option=com_spreadsheets&view=search&spreadsheet=cap&Itemid=188
I know you're not homeless yet, but (if you haven't already done so) you might try calling 1-877-424-3838 (the VA's line for homeless and at-risk veterans) to see what resources are available to you. There's also an online chat line (see the link on the left-hand side of this page: http://www.va.gov/homeless/housing.asp )
I wish you and your family the very best!

(16,190 posts)I would actually prefer to earn the money to fix things by selling the shirts. However, sales have been exceptionally slow for the last two months. Even in the best of months, I only get about 13-18 sales, and I need to sell about 80 this month just to clear up the overdraft.
Just in case anyone was wondering, the shirts being referenced can be found here (there are different items in the two, which is why I list both):

and there is one other design that can be found here:

(16,190 posts)Seriously, every little bit helps. I assure you that once I'm back on my feet, I'll be back to helping others too.
And I don't really need another t-shirt, just put it all toward your goal.
Best of luck, Terry!

(16,190 posts)Yeah, I was wondering about the shirt.

She should contact the Veterans association and ask for help for your situation, especially if your sons are under 18.

(16,190 posts)However, there are issues here (which I really can't talk about) that keep me from adding additional burdens to her. We share pretty much everything - and this is a one-off thing.

(16,190 posts)Things are tight, but we always have enough, plus extra to give the kids treats. I do understand you, but I can't really explain my wife's situation at the moment.

(22,651 posts)No need to explain her 'situation', good luck!

(16,190 posts)The late letters aren't really there at the moment, but mostly because I've been stretching to get the mortgage paid each month (hence the overdrafts). I do agree that this is something that we should share; however, I just happen to be aware of some things that others are not.
This really is a weird situation, I've had a job continuously since I was twelve, always managed finances well and paid all of my bills. Things have been tougher now that I'm on a fixed income. That's why I sell the hand screened tees and whatnot, to help bring in a little extra money in the months that I have sales.

Do you mean for a $50 donation, or you wanted to buy one? If it was to buy one, then you can get it (not sure which of the two you meant) here:

If it was for a donation, just leave me a note with which one you want - size, color, etc.
