Donald Trump tells the New York Times:
No if you really look at it, it was the turn of the century, thats when we were a great, when we were really starting to go robust. But if you look back, it really was, there was a period of time when we were developing at the turn of the century which was a pretty wild time for this country and pretty wild in terms of building that machine, that machine was really based on entrepreneurship etc, etc. And then I would say, yeah, prior to, I would say during the 1940s and the late 40s and 50s we started getting, we were not pushed around, we were respected by everybody, we had just won a war, we were pretty much doing what we had to do, yeah around that period.

(9,263 posts)I say when has America not been great in the modern era....we have lines of immigrants that want in...no other country has that....trumps statement is wrong on every level...we have never lost our greatness in the world

(10,715 posts)as we have generally been a very wealthy nation, as opposed to a very poor nation. Poor people in poor nations wishing for a better life have often lined up to come here. Generally they have been treated like crap.

(24,324 posts)And the meme of 'those lines of people' is just way too simplistic as evidence of any perceived greatness. It is what I have heard from republicans for decades; it simply is not true.

(21,786 posts)Net migration to the UK last year was 330K; net migration to the US for 2013 (the last year I can find figures for) was around 800K. The UK has one-fifth the US population, so more than double the immigration rate per capita.

(156 posts)we were a great country and really going somewhere then came Reagan and he screwed it all up with austerity and trickle down economics.
God help us if Trump gets anywhere near the White House we are all screwed.

(7,315 posts)Make them name a year. And then ask them what the tax rate was. That will shut them up fast.
