(24,825 posts)It's a stupid ad but aren't most TV ads pretty dumb? It certainly doesn't make me want to run to DQ.
I'll echo msongs post: where's the racist part? Perhaps Old Union Guy could enumerate what he's seeing or what I'm missing.

Substitute white dad and white son, or white dad and mixed son, or black dad and mixed son...all the same.

Think about it - White Powder!
The commercial is designed to subliminal promote an Aryan skinhead racist slogan!
The responses in this thread are fantastic !

(66,745 posts)1. Dark-skinned man with balloons. This plays into the decades-old racist belief that dark-skinned men are pawns of Big Helium
2. White, possibly middle-aged woman wearing a white sun hat. Maintains the racist stereotype that white people wear hats in the sun.
3. Dark-skinned man riding bumper cars with a dark-skinned boy. What could be more pointedly racist than having a fun time at an amusement park?
4. Long-haired white funnel cake vendor throwing a fist-pump. Need I say more? Classic!
5. Two fair-skinned young women sitting in a teacup. This is clearly a throwback to the days of the British empire and its stranglehold on tea production around the world (around as in "spinning around"
.
Duh.
Also, that DQ entrance clearly isn't handicapped-accessible. What if that's the only point of access?!?

If he hopped out of the bumper car, hotwired a car and drove it off you would have a point. I dont really see any problem with this ad.

(5,169 posts)There is far more than enough legitimate examples of racism that it is not necessary to micro-analyze a goofy commercial.
Let's flip it around: Should African Americans be excluded from humorous roles in movies, TV, and commercials just to make sure they do not come close to saying or doing anything that YOU consider racist?
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)It's why the floor is metal.
Bumper cars don't actually work unless they are in the enclosure with the metal floor and the pole in contact with the ceiling.
It is a fantasy situation suggestive of the availability of a classic carnival food item at a place other than a carnival.
To see this as anyone "stealing a car" strikes me as odd.
Orrex
(66,745 posts)Up until 12 seconds ago I understood bumper cars to be powered by laughter and happiness.

(62,444 posts)About the only thing I got from it was "So, it would appear they have funnel cakes at Dairy Queen."
Since I had my blood tested last week, but haven't been to my follow up appointment, I figure this is an opportune time to go on a cholesterol binge anyway.
The ad is clearly racist, as there are no Asians in it. Asians have an increased incidence of lactose intolerance, and since this is Dairy Queen we are talking about, then the ad is clearly designed to discourage Asians from going to Dairy Queen.

If you transpose the racial identity of the main characters with another race, you'd get the same effect.

(55,334 posts)There's two demographic groups of people who see this way: older people (60+ or so) who grew up in the shadow of Jim Crow and younger people (those under 40) who grew up in a society of constant dogwhistle politics.
So basically everyone who's not about my age is wrong.

(8,419 posts)So you are going for two black guys "stealing" a car. But they are obviously father son, or at a minimum, youth with role model. They are nicely dressed, free from any tats, chains, etc.
You are way overthinking this.
Now if the CEO of DQ was in the ad and said "look at my African Americans," then you would have a racist ad.

(65,616 posts)the stereotype might have been not as obvious. Racist, no...stereotypes, yeah maybe.
Warpy
(114,448 posts)After all, they didn't rip off a bumper car that was just sitting there. They'd already paid the fare and were in it. "Stealing a car" is therefore a huge stretch.
I guess if you want to see racism everywhere, that's what you're going to see. This ad is stupid but I don't see the racism in it, especially since you knew those two blondes at the end were going to ride that teacup right after them.
Rex
(65,616 posts)The fact that the males 'broke out' GTA style and the young ladies floated through the drivethru in a teacup...meh...yeah just really hard to see racism there.
Maybe a stereotype, but a hard stretch to see racism.
However, one of the main things to normalize integration in this country was the use of POC in stupid commercials. Before the Civil Rights legislation was passed, television was largely a lily white wasteland, the only POC were seen in old Amos n Andy reruns.
After the legislation passed, black men were giving women the stinkeye over ring around the collar just like their white brethren and that normalized seeing black faces in other unexpected places (like anywhere but doing shit work).
So long live the stupid ass, borderline stereotyped commercial. It has power the admen never anticipated.
