http://latest.com/2016/06/ben-stein-trump-doesnt-know-a-goddamn-thing-about-economics-but-im-voting-for-him-anyway/I think Trump is popular because he says: I am going to go to China and get those jobs back. But he is not going to be able to do that. And any attempt to try would be a disaster.
I dont think Trump knows a goddamn thing about economics.
But I like him anyway, I might add.

(35,773 posts)And yet Ben Stein is voting for him. Nice confession of your stupidity, Stein.
I went to the theater to watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off this past weekend. How I wish Stein was not in the film. His scumbaggery now ruins those scenes.

(78,249 posts)Not a bad retro choice, actually. I mean, how many times can you see The Room, or even Rocky Horror?

(35,773 posts)They show quite a few old films, as do The Hollywood Theater and Cinema 21, who also show the majority of the art films shown in the area. It's the 30th anniversary of the film, so I would suspect someone is showing it in your part of the woods!

(35,773 posts)There was group there all dressed in costumes from the film. They had made a pilgrimage to Chicago a few years ago to do all the things they did in the film, while wearing those costumes.
I'm always jealous of places like New York, where there is so much to see, that I forget we have it pretty good. Still, I guess I just assumed the Bay Area would have it at least as good. The Hollywood Theater is in our neighborhood, for example, and they show old kids films at matinee times two weekends a month. It's been an awesome way to relive some of my childhood faves with my own kid.
On the other hand, I am done with certain growths in Portlandia, such as the clear gentrification, anti-science nonsense (see opposition to water fluoridation and love of alt med silliness), and sometimes misguided anger ( http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2016/06/is_portland_one_of_the_us_angr.html ).
Well, I can't afford to move to your neck of the woods, it's not much different in Seattle, and it's hot enough now up here, so I'm not going south or east to the humid hells I used to know!
KamaAina
(78,249 posts)It probably does. "Sad Jose", however, is like a piece of SoCal that drifted up along the plate boundary and collided with the Bay Area.

(35,773 posts)Of course, us Timbers Army folk do spend too much time making fun of the 1906 Ultras, though I'm not sure that's really wrong, either.

(78,249 posts)most MLS sides can barely scare up a supporters' section!
HuckleB
(35,773 posts)... have serious support, all three Canadian teams, all three Cascadian teams, Philadelphia, and Orlando, too. That support has grown groups in KC, Columbus (where they have always had good support), and it's even picking up in New England, of all places, with that crap NFL stadium.
Sacramento FC has a heck of a following in USL, and should be in MLS, in my opinion!
The fun is just beginning.

(78,249 posts)This is why we need a promotion/relegation system like the English Barclays Premiership has.

(35,773 posts)In an age of money, it led to the one of the most incredible sports stories in history with the Foxes of the EPL this year, but the reality is that it leaves only five or six teams at most with a realistic chance of winning a league title.
I would suspect, as time goes on, that the pro/rel system will probably go away, as owners with big money refuse to buy in if their investment is at risk, but I could be wrong, as I often am. (I dissed my own team all last year, only to have them win the MLS Cup, and you have no idea how awesome that was to a 48-year-old who had only one favorite team win a title before, and that in a league and a sport he doesn't really care about, the NFL.)
Quite frankly, I could also see the European Champions League becoming an actual league with home and away fixtures for everyone, instead of the middling tournament format it has now. The money would be massive for the clubs involved.
I don't like that, but until the world stops moving toward ever greater extremes between the haves and the have nots, I can't see that end not happening.

(3,051 posts)Back from his days as a speechwriter from Richard Nixon. We would drink booze together, back when Republicans and Democrats kind of got along. A couple of observations:
1. He is absolutely hilarious in person. He has a biting, satirical, wit that leaves no person untouched. I used to write down his insults for later use.
2. He probably is mildly racist as old people (of all races) are prone to be. This is one of the reasons I refuse to go to a retirement community. Mainly, however, he's just an ass and will say racists things (e.g. "Cassius Clay" to get a rise because he likes to tweak people.
3. He knows his economics. He does not understand the social implications of economics because he is the grinder, hard working, type who rise to the top no matter what. You strip him of all his worldly possessions and status and dump in on a foreign island and he would be a successful guy with a successful coconut stand 3 years later. He doesn't understand, and has no time for, people who aren't like him. (This is actually typical of a lot of "good guy" conservatives. I've observed them up close like Gorillas in the Myst.)

They all hate Trump, but they'll vote for him because their hatred of Clinton is much stronger.
They are all evangelicals and they all vote every election. There are a lot of them.
I don't fit into that family very well.
