Republicans continue to back the racist candidate

In spite of all the hand-wringing by Republican politicians and commentators, they are mostly still supporting Donald Trump's candidacy as their presidential nominee. Their hypocrisy is staggering!

With his repeated and, in fact, escalating racist comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel and other judges with ethnic backgrounds, Mr. Trump has demonstrated that he really has no grasp of the fundamental concepts of the United States' structure of government. The separation of powers between the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches is crucial to the balance of powers designed by the Founding Fathers and upheld by over 225 years of governing.

Once again, Republican leaders have shown that they are no better in their understanding of these principles. While they've "condemned" Mr. Trump's bigoted assertions about the heritage of our judges, Senate Republicans have gone to unconstitutional lengths to hold open a Supreme Court seat for Mr. Trump to fill, should he be elected president. This is unconscionable and even William Kristol, the man who is almost always wrong, got it right: "Official position of the leadership of the Republican Party: Trump is an inexcusable bigot, and Trump must be our next president."

Under no circumstances should Mr. Trump be allowed anywhere near the levers of the awesome powers of the United States. He is an evil man supported by an equally nefarious party.

Now that our internecine battle to choose our Democratic nominee is clearly over, let's make certain that we get rid of as many Republicans as possible. THEY are the greatest threat to American liberties, principles and way-of-life.

this is it. I thought we determined that some time ago, but I have to admit I don't expect it to get this blatant.

The many, many supporters of Donald Trump are people we work with, ride the trains and buses and planes with and live with. Their behavior and attitudes and ignorance frighten me.

Our government has problems.

Trump isn't the solution.

Blowing everything up is not in anyone's interest except the unregulated billionaires, and their corporations.

Textbook comments does he have to make for everyone to conclude he's a racist asshole?

He's been espousing bigotry for over a year now and that didn't stop all sorts of people on the right from lining up behind him.

What's different now?

so long. I guess this victim gets special treatment because he's a judge. The rest of us "pigs" (women), disabled people, and those with a minority religion will just have to wait for republicans to get all worked up, but we shouldn't hold our breath.

As for his supporters, they'll just tell us we're too sensitive.

Earlier, Donald Trump would smear a broad swath of faceless "others" without identities. But by personalizing his attacks on Judge Curiel, Mr. Trump has focused on a judge who is beyond reproach. He's demonstrated a total lack of understanding of and respect for the Judiciary and that has startled Republicans. Here's an excellent article from The Week:

http://theweek.com/articles/628384/why-donald-trump-wont-stop-talking-about-judge-curiel

One quote stands out:

"The more thoughtful among them are also worried for a more principled reason: Trump's point of view is the most dead-end identity politics — the kind of thing principled conservatives, principled liberals, and, indeed, anyone who believes in the rule of law viscerally opposes. Trump's isn't a plea for justice, but a declaration that justice is impossible."

Understand that there is no way that I am defending Mr. Trump's earlier comments. I loathe the man. But I think this helps to show why all of a sudden, Donald Trump's Teflon is cracking.
