Florida - Elementary school principal arrested on child pornography charges

The principal of a Florida elementary school is in hot water after he was arrested on child pornography charges.

Police arrested 59-year-old Ricky Sheppard following a search of his home.

Investigators say they are still sifting through 1,100 files that they claim are “child notable.”

Sheppard, who is the principal of Spessard Holland Elementary School in Satellite Beach, was placed on administrative leave.

While this was his first year as a principal at the school, officials told WESH that he has worked for the district for the last 35 years.

In fact, WESH reports that Sheppard was officially reprimanded in 1999 for allegedly giving inappropriate gifts and making inappropriate statements to a first-grader.

“Honestly, words can’t express just how saddened and disgusted I am,” said Dr. Desmond Blackburn, Brevard County Schools superintendent.

If convicted, Sheppard could face up to 20 years in prison.

Back in 1999, Sheppard landed in hot water after it was revealed he had lavished a six-year-old in his class with gifts over a six week period, which the boy's mother complained about. According to the letter of reprimand, Sheppard had also made comments to the child along the lines of wanting to take him home with him and having a room set aside for him.

Subsequently, the teacher was not allowed to have private contact with the boy and was ordered not to give him any gifts or make inappropriate comments, but Sheppard's career did not suffer for the incident.
