Harry Reid Wants Elizabeth Warren To Be Vice President

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by one_voice (a host of the General Discussion forum).

WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) believes Elizabeth Warren should be the running mate of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, according to four Senate sources familiar with Reid’s thinking.

Reid had initially been skeptical of the chatter around Warren, publicly warning that Democrats couldn’t afford to lose the seat the Massachusetts senator currently occupies. But The Boston Globe reported last week that he tasked attorney Marc Elias with studying how manageable the loss would be. Elias is, not coincidentally, the general counsel for Clinton’s campaign.

As Reid has examined the issue in recent weeks, he has grown confident the Democrats could hold onto Warren’s Senate seat and retake the upper chamber, according to sources. He also believes they could even put the House in play for Democrats, the sources said.

The case for Warren is straightforward: She’s an outspoken populist-progressive who could rally supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to Clinton’s cause. Her grassroots fundraising prowess is legendary and could offset whatever loss of campaign revenue came from financial industry leaders souring on Clinton. And Warren’s appeal goes far beyond the Sanders camp: A January 2015 focus group of independents and Republicans found that she and her message resonate strongly with working and middle class voters of all stripes.

It is time for Bernie's supporters to help get a Democrat into the WH and get a Democrat majority in the Senate at the very least. The absolute hell she would bring to the GOP is freakish.

If putting her on the ticket can win over some of the more reluctant Sanders supporters, than it could improve Clinton's chances and also help the down ballot races.

Hill gets the FBI no-no, Warren could move up or Warren can run in 2024. But my voting would only be to support Elizabeth, not her running mate.

Currently, she can browbeat and embarrass banksters when they try to lie to her. We don't have anyone else in the Senate with her knowledge who can fill her shoes. That's my main reservation about this pick.

VP is a largely ceremonial role. But Warren would make a hell of a president should Hillary decide to step down for whatever reason. And having her on the ticket would bring a lot of Berners like me enthusiastically on board.

So it's a calculation, but one requiring more info to fully process: what the FBI decides to do, and when. It's possible Clinton could win without Warren, and be fine. If the FBI does decide to indict before the convention (unlikely), they should give the nom to Bernie; if afterwards, a Clinton/Warren ticket would definitely put Warren in the White House. If they decide not to indict, she can pick anyone and probably be okay.
