... Attorney General’s Office representatives are in Siskiyou County today after reports Sheriff Jon Lopey has been intimidating residents of Hmong descent to keep them from voting in today’s election ...

Lori Shellenberger, the American Civil Liberties Union’s director of the California Voting Rights Project, said she was contacted last week by a representative of the Hmong community that residents were being intimidated by the Sheriff’s Office.

Shellenberger said the Sheriff’s Office set up a checkpoint outside a subdivision near Hornbrook and stopped cars being driven by Hmongs only and asked them whether they were registered to vote ...

Lopey was not available for comment Tuesday and has not returned a message left at his office ...

Siskiyou County, which borders Oregon. For those familiar with this area, Mt Shasta is here and Interstate 5 bisects. The Sheriff is a Tea Party Oath Taker Bundy supporter. Unbelievably, he and his assistants targeted the Hmong community by setting up road blocks or knocking on their doors and questioning their Voter Registrations. Even intimidating with arms, at least as reported. He desperately wants to stop legal outdoor marijuana growing for medicinal, again legal, and force it indoors with expensive ventilation systems required. We all know that drill--the same way they take away abortion rights. By the way, those two measures passed in Siskiyou County on Tuesday night.

Yes, it is a redneck, logging, agricultural, high unemployment county, though there are enclaves of liberalism.
