"Jesus was a far better person than Stupidparty gives him credit for. One also has to wonder how the male dominated Stupidparty disciples who clearly have un-Christ like views, will get their respective camels to enter the proverbial eye of the needle.

(40,416 posts)There's also Robert M. Price, another Christ myth advocate, and an advocate of Earl Doherty.
Granted, he's a Republican, but his Bible Geek podcast is quite astounding. I confess that I am a bit addicted to it.

(80,708 posts)"Biblical historians" will agree he was real, but they have sort of a vested interest in the historical veracity of the bible, by definition.
At the very least the total lack of corroborating contemporary accounts - except Josephus, a passage widely discredited and considered forged after the fact- ought to make people at least question what is taken by many as a sort of "well, of course" proposition.

(58,634 posts)There were many preachers and prophets running around Palestine at the time. What we think of as Jesus was, in my mind a construct made by combining numerous stories from the era.
There's no need for a "real" Jesus. Myths are myths because they touch people on a deep level, not because they are historically accurate.

(3,051 posts)There are a plethora of sources about a certain Nazarine preaching, getting crowds worked up, and getting executed, including non-Christian sources (most notably the Talmud).
The rub is on the claim he was the Mosiach.
Upon that point, reasonable minds differ.

This article makes it very clear from "his own words".

You push one, it says, "You're a good person."
You push another, "Your views are exactly mine, so you're always right."
A third gives you, "Everybody should think like you, you're so awesome!"
At least some are honest and don't need the mechanized prop telling them good or right or awesome they are.
