It is really very simple and you, mom, while continuing to love your child, are missing the point. He got off very lightly for his horrendous actions.

It's horrible when parents are confronted with the knowledge that their child committed a violent act, but HE's responsible for their anguish, their notoriety etc. -- not the victim, not the swim team, and not the courts.

I sincerely doubt they raised him to be a monster and I know they are loath to admit that's what he has become. To them, he's still the sweet little boy in trainer pants who loved puppies and kittens.

I feel sorry for them, actually, because he's shamed them, no matter whether or not they're ready to admit it. Negative public attention is not easy to live with and it should all belong to the monster, not to his parents.

Having read both their letters it is very clear where the little shithead rapist gained his sense of entitlement and feeling that the rules didn't apply to him.

If there had been any empathy from them for his victim I would feel far different. As it is, I'm finding it way hard to feel much empathy for them.

I'm old. I've known too many good people with rotten kids and too many rotten people with good kids to issue blanket blame or credit to people I don't know.

didn't fall far from the tree.

Both parents' statements focus on how their son's "ordeal" has interfered with their ability to properly enjoy the perks of their own privileged lives. Neither showed any concern at all for the way their little monster's criminal acts impacted his victim's ability to enjoy much of anything with any sense of safety or without the shadow of a nightmare experience casting a pall over her entire life.

Baby boy can't enjoy his big ribeye steaks any more. Oh, boo-hoo. Mommy can't even enjoy decorating their nice new home. Boo-hoo-hoo.

Talk about tone deaf and self-absorbed.

Many of us were bothered that little Isaiah's mother didn't express any concern that a precious member of an endangered species, an intelligent and sentient being, had to be killed because she didn't bother to watch her kid or to raise him to obey rules or to behave halfway decently in public places. Yet her singular focus on the fact that her 3-year-old son had not died (especially since most people naturally rank a child's life above another animal's, even when the other animal is as precious as Harambe was) is far more understandable than the Turner parents' exclusive focus on the disruption of their and their son's trivial pleasures of privilege over the horrendous crime he committed against another human being. And unlike Isaiah, Brock is certainly old enough to be held fully responsible for his deliberate choice to rape an unconscious woman AND to take a picture of her naked breasts and share it with everyone on his swim team.

He has never accepted responsibility for his crime, nor has he or either parent shown any remorse or concern for his victim, so, no, I do not think we need to refrain from criticizing his parents. He obviously got his values and his "me first and only" attitude from his parents, and they continue to display those same values and to encourage and reinforce them in their nasty, vicious son.

[Bb]ON EDIT: Did you see THIS part of her letter?

My first thought upon wakening every morning is “this isn’t real, this can’t be real. Why him? Why HIM? WHY? WHY?” I have cried every single day since Jan. 18 {emphasis added}.

NOTE: I added the bold, but the caps on "HIM" are all hers. She acts as though this is something that happened to him rather than something he DID to an innocent victim. She thinks HE (and her husband and herself, of course) is the only real victim!

That's exactly the line that made me want to vomit. BECAUSE HE RAPED SOMEONE, YOU DUMBASS.

Fucking clueless. So clueless that she didn't even edit her statement to make it more palatable in the real world where her son the rapist has been busted. Not aware at all.

After all this, like you said, she still thinks he's the victim here. So fucked up.

loving your own child and supporting them in times of trouble like this is understanding. It's got to be hell to deal with that.

HOWEVER you can do it in such a way that acknowledges what your kid did and the convey sympathy to the girl involved and some concern for her too - and her family. This kid is indeed a result of his raising by privileged self centered adults and proof of that is how the handled this.

He seems like the kind of guy who has taken advantage of her sexually before, and she like the good wife who willingly takes his abuse because she believes it's her duty as a wife.

The son will someday marry a woman just like mommy and act just like daddy.

one of my sons' teachers told me about a study that had been done regarding highly gifted young people across a wide variety of fields--sports, the arts, academics, whatever. The ONE thing they all had in common was a parent--usually the mother--who sacrificed everything to support that child in his/her endeavors. Most parents support their children by taking them to practices, cheering them on, etc. But these were people who went way beyond normal. These are parents who are so heavily invested in their child's success to the exclusion of everything or everyone else.

I thought of that when I read the mom's letter. She can't help herself. She is deeply enmeshed. Her self-worth is on the line. Doesn't excuse a thing, but it does explain it.

Totally tone-deaf. He gets no leeway from me.

Mom's letter, on the other hand, was that of a broken grieving mother. Trust me, with a brother on death row for 20 years, I know her, figuratively. It is very likely true that her son's actions on that night are totally out of character with his actions in the rest of his entire life. That doesn't diminish at all what he did, or suggest the consequence he received were far too low. But her letter resonates, to the extent she is describing a son whose personality and actions are irreconcilable in her mind with his actions that night.

The only complaint I have about her plea for mercy is that, rather than remaining silent or acknowledging responsibility for his actions, she places the blame on the verdict.

In which case, their blood-line ends here and now.

I cannot imagine any sentient woman who would willingly procreate with the RAPIST.

Yes, I know: there may be some females who feel some sympathy for the RAPIST's narrow, sorry -- albeit depraved -- ass enough to ignore the 'sexual offender' warning, and then willingly (one hopes) submit to the RAPIST. However, I cling to the hope that this particular DNA sequence has found a dead end.

Sorry, you didn't read Mom's letter:

His older brother Brent had played Bill Sykes 5 years before and I think that’s why the teacher cast Brock in the role. For Brent it was a bit of type-casting (he was a handful in elementary school), while Brock wouldn’t stop smiling.

ZERO. None. Not once, not a mention of the victim not ONCE. It is all, 'Brock came directly from God's loins and this one bad thing (that happened to our godlike-son) that brought him down to the mortal realms is hurting our family.'

This is the worst contemporary case of white male privilege I've ever seen. So now he will not end up being a hedge fund manager at the top bank one day. His swim times will never be the same.
