The confederacy was an attempt to use violence to overthrow the US government. It cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans on both sides. In spite of rhetoric about states' rights, the war was to preserve slavery for the benefit of the wealthy few. In my mind, this makes Jefferson Davis an enormous traitor, certainly not a person we should honor by displaying his likeness all around our pubic buildings. I don't now why southerners insist on loving him so publicly. The Germans feel shame concerning Hitler and what he did to them, so why can't people in the south come to terms with their mistake?
