This crime could *not* have occured without the root problem (desire to kill people)
This crime *could* have occured without guns, and may have been worse, for example ifna bomb was used.

(2,337 posts)In the mentioned area affect, indiscriminate, high explosive weaponry you mentioned, and a small caliber rifle which fires one bullet per pull of a trigger?
If not, I'm afraid we're too far apart on this to speak rationally. Been a gun guy my whole life, but I've never met a single person who advocated civilians posessing high explosives. It's a ridiculous strawman.
uponit7771
(90,335 posts)... that's a fact not in dispute.
Those weapons should NOT be allowed in the hands of the avg citizen

(5,586 posts)That weapon is designed to have a magazine attach right in front of the trigger assembly.
In addition, neither one of those weapons can easily be altered for automatic fire. I suppose you could do it, but you'd have to be a metalworking genius, and have access to parts that are very tightly regulated by the ATF.

(90,335 posts)... not so much.
I also named other attributes which most folk who are appologizing for these weapons ignore...

discntnt_irny_srcsm
(18,479 posts)...this is an absolutely tragic and horrible crime. The people who commit these crimes are the one responsible. It leaves me hollow having some useless wretch destroy so many lives and then kill himself. There is no one to arrest or ask why or lock away and lose the key.
I get that when these miserably disgusting events happen, a common response is to look for causes and more people to hold responsible. IMO blaming the gun is just a distraction.
Both of those guns accept a magazine. AFAIK the Orlando dirt bag didn't use a full auto (modified or not) and they both fire at exactly the same rate. They both fire as fast as you can pull the trigger, one shot per pull.
Butt???

Sounds like a failure of the federal background check system.

If his wife or other family had pressed charges or gotten a restraining order, his guns would have been removed. But they didn't.
