Stopping evil in the world is a tall order. Stopping legal homophobia is even a tall order, but we can at least start with that goal.

The UN might be able to earn some of its hefty keep if it really put its shoulder to the wheel on this. And, by "shoulder to the wheel," I don't mean only a sternly-worded statement.

It's hideous isn't it.

I happened to be watching a documentary on the Dark Ages yesterday (not the sanitized version I got in school), and stuff like this is straight out of there, with guns.

I don't know what to say. I empathize as much as I can, and when I do that it terrifies me.

A smiley seems too weak, but it's all I can offer in a post.

It's always darkest before the light.

More and more people are supporting LGBTQ, and that scares those who fear and hate them.

This instance was a combination of two hatreds...anyone who wasn't radical Islam and anyone LGBTQ. So it was a young man willing to die for his hatred, which is not often what you have to worry about. But as the ISIS triggered terror attacks rise, the attacks on LGBTQ might also rise. I wish this weren't so.

But as I first said, more people ARE supporting and accepting LGBTQ than ever before and that means we are seeing progress. Any time a group feels threatened by change they lash out, but eventually the change crushes them. It takes time, and we stand with you through this change and welcome you with open arms when you need support and comfort.

And that nothing will change.

Yes. For me (and perhaps for Hemingway?), John Donne said it best. I wish the beginning of the poem were not so Europe-centered or male-centered, but it always moves me anyway.

Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

What does it matter if the person you love has a different color of skin or is 'the wrong gender'.
I am a 57 year old Grandma and I have honestly thought for many years that your gender is between your ears, not between your legs.
Of course, I am a lifelong liberal who lives in Colorado, where we voted pot as legal. I use it for my MS pain. We would have less car accidents if it was legal national.

... I say "love trumps hate", not because it instantly neutralizes hate in the face of it. That has never happened. It takes a much higher order of sustained effort.

My sister has a saying... Go ahead... Kill me. I'll only be dead, meaning, any actor will be left with hate until it consumed them. She's gone through a lot in life. I truly believe THAT attitude deflates the intention.

Doesn't seem possible at this point, yet, I believe it's true that hate would burn out far faster than what we'd LIKE to do in response to domestic terrorism and hate crimes.

Especially need to see this after all the bullshit I am seeing here.

Thank you for this thread. It really is needed by me (and probably a few others) to ground us.

213. You're welcome. As I've said, it was little enough, but all I could think of at the moment.

In hindsight, in a less emotional moment, I wish I had put some donation links in the OP. Or maybe that would have been crass? I don't know, but I didn't think of it when I started the thread. I was all emotion, no thinking.

Maybe I will do another OP in a few days. HRC is my go to. If you have any organizations to recommend for that thread, please reply to this post with them or pm me. Thanks.

The Trevor Project which is a suicide hotline for LGBTQ youth and others, as well as a resource for LGBT people struggling and Cyndi Lauper's True Colors Fund which works to end (and addresses) LGBT homelessness, especially among youth.

Lauper is something else.

This is great. Maybe I should do a thread for everyone to can post his or favorite places to donate to LGBTQ causes.

I made a small donation-- not as much as I'd like, but at least it's something.

Thank you for this thread.
