35. Please elaborate on what you mean by "October surprise?"

I understand "October surprise" to mean "In American political jargon, an October surprise is a news event deliberately created or timed (or sometimes occurring spontaneously) to influence the outcome of an election, particularly one for the U.S. presidency."

Do you think that is what occurred?

42. NO I don't think it was planned. Rather the concept that something extraordinary occurs that can

sway the political discourse in some direction or the other.

In this case, I suspect the anti-Islam angle will play more than equality or gun control. As an example, Peter King is on here bloviating on all things Islam...

And I can envision that the issue of Islam will gain a lot of prominence.

I am hopeful that politicians will fully acknowledge what occurred and the role of ideology and organizations in this action.

3. For the NRA and the Republicans

Why block a bill that stops people under suspicion of extremist activity from having access to firearms? What law-abiding gun owner does that hurt?

They need to have part-ownership of this one thrust upon them ASAP.

10. Yes, I do.

If someone is too dangerous to fly, why aren't they under arrest or at least charged?

If they aren't dangerous enough to be detained, why should they nor be allowed to move freely?

You shouldn't be able to abridge a person's rights without due process by placing them on a list that can be added to effortlessly, yet near impossible to remove yourself from.

It's Bushco. bullshit.

51. No constitutional right to fly, but the 4th Amendment protects from preventative detention

That's why you can't lock everyone up on mere suspicion, but can create a No-Fly list on suspicion. To those who read 2A the wrong way, that also extends to the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. It's a bad dilemma, I agree.

Was he a danger.

Of course, as a senator, one phone call got him off the list. I'm sure if it was me or you placed on the list in error it would not be so easy to get it fixed.

11. Well, so was Dylan Roof

ultimately, he was an extremist who purchased guns without a problem. Yet unlike this freak, he wasn't investigated. Common sense legislation after him, after San Bernardinho could have reduced the likelihood of this and future instances.

Of course, it might be that you're right. It might be that Trump & co receive a big boost from that angle and it might be necessary for Democrats to pivot to the right on Muslims in particular to avoid catastrophe in November, but I hope not.

There are nut that live in their own nut universe and their nuttery is a matter of thought. Then there are nuts that take action that impacts others. I think that organizations can play a role in motivating nuts to move their nuttery from the realm of thought to that of action.
