(849 posts)It seems the Santa Monica PD has rubbed egg all over the FBIs face
FBI had 2 encounters with the Orlando killer, decided no problem and completely dropped him off law enforcement radar.
The police officer smelled a rat and kept digging till he ferreted out the lies from the rat. It would have been real easy for the officer to just buy the lie and let the guy go on his way to 'find' who he stated he was looking for.

(296,886 posts)A neighbor tipped off the police in the Santa Monica situation
was using info from the other post (link below) that stated officer contacted offender on a prowler call and he stated he was 'waiting for a friend'. That led to my statement that a lesser officer could just buy the statement and let him on his way.

(20,051 posts)I'm going to make clear here I'm not equating the capture of this person to a failure by the FBI. I'm just very greatful he was caught before he hurt anyone!

(849 posts)The FBI did their groundwork, but biffed the follow through. They should of, could of, flagged his name/SSN/DOB in the NICS database to at least force a delay for further processing for when he bought the AR which has been reported was a week before the shooting. The CA cops did great. I was a street cop in the 80's and believe me it's very easy to buy a story sold by a calm smooth talker and let them go on their way if the computer or dispatch doesn't spit out a reason to detain them or dig further. It was a great catch that may have averted another tragedy.
