(268,692 posts)because post cold war, America needs a new enemy for the war machine and the big banks to loot.
Angry lost young men with more baggage than a Fed Ex warehouse continue to act out their fantasies because they have easy access to assault rifles.

We don't have a muslim terrorist problem, we have a male anger problem.

(36,063 posts)Anger is well within that range, it's a feature that's moved along with the human path through history. For many reasons anger, and episodic poor anger management, is probably not going to go away.
What hasn't been and, thankfully, isn't yet a feature of humanness is universal access to high capacity rapid loading semi-automatic weapons.
2nd Amendment assumes we are to have a well regulated militia. A well regulated militia has rules and leaders.
It's clear that our militia is causing problems because some of its members are disorderly and almost all of it's weapons are dangerous.
I think it's high the nation's leaders acknowledge that the current lack of regulation of the militia presents an unacceptable risk to civil safety. Which means it's also high time for the commander-in-chief to step up and impose some regulation on that militia.

I got exposed to a good bit of fundamentalism growing up but my parents were not fundies, something I come to be more and more thankful for the older I get.

(3,795 posts)A very heavy mark for many brought up in that environment. I was lucky to get through a certain period in my life, and I had to have a complete nervous breakdown and lose everything before I could come to grips with being gay. I became non-functioning for awhile.
It is definitely possible to overcome, but I sometimes feel that pain that I went through will always be with me to some extent. I wish I could leave those feelings completely behind for good. To be clear, the pain I reference is referring to painful feelings I sometimes experience whenever I reflect on that period of my life. I sometimes feel sad that I had to go through so much, but whenever I feel this way I am able to shake it off by focusing on the present. Thinking back to my later childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood will probably always be at least somewhat painful for me. I am committed to doing all I can to try and prevent as many people as I can from experiencing what I went through.
On a positive note my first boyfriend (that helped me deal with SO much) is my current life partner. I have no idea how that happened with all of the issues I had early on in our relationship, but I am so lucky to have him in my life.
The LGBT community has come so far, but we have a lot more progress to make. There are still many places in this country where someone who is gay might still be surrounded only by people that condemn being gay like I experienced, and that will cause incredible damage. Still.

(41,103 posts)of late with some justification. But serious illnesses require medical determination if possible I believe especially if they're of an emotional nature in order to prevent additional negative misconceptions and stigmatization.

(5,018 posts)Being homosexual and raised with a bigoted religion that spews hate towards you would "disturb" plenty of people, to put it lightly.
The ideologies that "disturb" these shooters often shares a lot of the blame.

I believe he was closeted homosexual who was conflicted and unable to live as he really wanted.
His last call with the police was to align himself with terror groups, yes, but it was also contradictory as to the groups (who are against each other) he named. To the last I believe he was ashamed of being homosexual and being thought of as such. And because of that we lost 50 beautiful souls.

(34,332 posts)sense. ISIS allegiance sounds like bullshit excuse to mask his true motive--hypermasculine guy from a culture/religion that hates gays, unable to accept himself goes postal. Sounds more plausible than a non-religious guy suddenly being radicalized. He was a walking time bomb waiting to go off.
