http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/andy-holt-gun-door-prize-orlando-shooting_us_575f0d84e4b071ec19eec3a7One day after the worst mass shooting in American history, Tennessee State Rep. Andy Holt (R) said he plans to give away two AR-15 assault rifles the same kind of weapon used in the massacre as a door prize at an upcoming political fundraiser.
Holt, a self-described conservative Christian, had announced last week that he would give away one AR-15 at Hogfest, a barbeque fundraiser on his farm that has a petting zoo and hay rides. But when reporters asked him after the Orlando, Florida, shooting on Sunday whether he still planned to give away the assault weapon, he told reporters that he now wants to give away two instead of one.
Im furious that I get phone calls from the media asking me if Im still going to give away an AR-15 at our HogFest, rather than asking me how many extra firearms Ill be handing out to ensure people can protect themselves, Holt wrote in a Facebook post on Monday. After all, it was a bullet that stopped the terrorist. Amazing how so many seem to miss that fact....
I want you to arm yourselves and learn to shoot with deadly accuracy should the need arise, he wrote. Protect your family. Protect yourselves. Protect your friends. Our government has made it quite clear that it is incapable of doing so. At the end of the day, its your responsibility anyways.

OP
They are good rifles for collecting, recreational and competitive shooting, hunting & self-defense.

The ability to take a very quick second shot is a great advantage when hunting.

Or effectively spray the field as fast as you can pull the trigger if you miss the 1st 15 times.

(34,127 posts)1. Raffling ARs is not uncommon at Republican fundraisers in the south and west.
A think some Democrats have done so, too.
If my Democratic representatives held an AR raffle, I would definitely pony up a little extra cash to win one.

Really they are. Its a really good design for many applications. I already have a couple in different configurations.
Unfortunately, what makes them good in many legitimate contexts also makes them effective in the hands of criminals and people motivated by malice.

(78,249 posts)9. Hunting? How many deer do you plan to take down at once?
How big is your freezer?
Self-defense? Are you planning on being attacked by a commando team?

(34,127 posts)18. I'm talking about the ergonomics, reliability, and modularity of the rifle
Your comments suggest you are focusing on the potential for firing all ammo out of a large magazine.
If you shoot a bunch of different rifles, you might find as I did, that the AR is really well designed and you can trade in parts and accessories so that it fits your body and use preferences more than any other rifle.
When hunting, I would probably use a 5 round magazine like many bolt actions do.
For self-defense in the home I have a 30-round magazine in my AR. I don't plan on shooting all those rounds at a single threatening person. Hopefully, I'll never have to use lethal force -- not ever. But I will say that the statistics involved with police-criminal shootouts suggest that having a decent sized magazine full of ammo is a good idea.

(15,064 posts)4. Would it not be ironic if one of the winners goes out
and commits a crime with it.

(15,064 posts)8. I think the right wing nut GOP gun humping law maker
would be just slightly embarrassed.
ManiacJoe
(10,136 posts)11. Why? He has no say in who wins.
Lint Head
(15,064 posts)13. Not the point. He doesn't have to give AR15 away at all.
They should be banned. And the NRA should disappear. They lobby for the ablity of terrorists to obtain assault weapons. The NRA is a tool of the gun manufacturers. They do not protect the 2nd Amendment. The GOP Rep is a gun humping fool.
You seem to be promoting the views of this GOP hack. No Democrat gives away guns. This is DU no RU.

The AWB should be re-instated along with banning high cap mags/clips/drums.
To argue otherwise is simply foolish.
