Rules committee is stacked with Cruz supporters. They don't know how many Trump delegates really support Trump. It might be worth throwing him overboard. Better to lose without him than to lose with him.
The key to it is unbinding delegates.

(56,828 posts)when somebody said they need to rein Trump in, another person mentioned that they could barely contain Sarah Palin in 2008, so they have no hope of containing Trump or telling him to tone it down with authority.

(14,040 posts)Trying to bounce Trump as the nominee at the convention is a losing proposition for the GOP. There is no way they get a good outcome from it.
Let's say they successfully remove Trump as the nominee...the Republican with the highest primary vote counts...ever. All of the diehard Trump supporters would then turn against the GOP leadership and you can guarantee they'd work to put forth candidates to replace the current Repub in office that encourages, participates in or other wise looks at Trump sideways.
If they don't do something, and just let Trump go on with his bad self, they could end up losing some seats.
What I think they're doing is weighing the loss of seats with the potential damage of ousting him could have. If they find it's a wash, they'll oust him but if they find ousting him leads to a greater loss, they'll keep him.
Personally, I think they're preparing for a loss this season and looking for 2020 but we'll see.

(56,828 posts)would the GOP powers that be just be able to draft Paul Ryan or somebody like that?
I had thought for a while now that maybe billionaires like the Koch Brothers, Sheldon Adelson, some of the Walton family, etc would pool some of their resources and secretly buy off Trump. Then, they put in somebody like Paul Ryan and promote him as a breath of fresh air ("he stood up to Trump's racism!" and somebody who avoided the nastiness of the primaries.
Trump claims to have a newly discovered health problem or something like that when he bows out just before the RNC.

(14,040 posts)Especially if you look at poll and primary numbers. No one in the GOP even came close to Trump. They may be able to save a few of the more "common sense" Republicans but think about the Trump base, because it is HIS base now.

(56,828 posts)The Republican Governor here - John Rowland - resigned in the face of impeachment over corruption charges. His Lieutenant Governor the 10 years (2 1/2 terms) he was in office was Jodi Rell. She came in and was promoted as that "breath of fresh air" and her approval ratings were a complete 180 from Rowland's - she was the most popular governor in America for a while, despite being a Republican governor in a blue state following a disgraced Republican. Two years later, she won re-election in an epic landslide (65-35%) to a full four year term. She was so popular and so untouched by John Rowland's stench that the local editorial cartoonist from The Hartford Courant would draw her in a Snow White costume.
