I used to think Trump's ego would not let him quit, but now I'm thinking that same ego would rather withdraw than lose. And it sure as hell looks like he's going to lose. I realize that polls this far out from the GE are pretty much meaningless, but a 70% unfavorable rating? DAMN! So, who do you think his replacement might be?

(4,459 posts)... but I think what the OP is really pondering is "will he STAY in the race as it becomes more and more clear that he will lose the GE?" (I'm not as convinced that he'll fold as others are - but I understand the argument that his ego would rather suffer a "quit" than a "defeat" , and if he DOES drop out, who will they install as the nominee?
I think it's likely to be Mittens because it might be thought to be easier to restart an old campaign than initiate a new one.

(11,358 posts)I don't know who that is, and I'm not sure they do either yet.
As always with Republicans, follow the money.

(81,847 posts)Jeb would be totally illegitimate. All of the others were rejected to. They will have to come up with someone new. Maybe go crazy and give it to Sasse, though he's got no experience.

(36,424 posts)I think there is some truth to it, too. Big egos can't stand losing. I have a friend who's been saying this all along. She thinks he will eat up the attention until the convention & then step down.

(23,334 posts)Be a quitter? I don't think so.
He can certainly win in losing as well.

(6,537 posts)is quite that sophisticated. I think it's a zero sum game with him.....he is the President or he is a Loser. But, I could certainly be wrong.
charlyvi
(6,537 posts)I don't think he could accept being a loser himself.
Gidney N Cloyd
(19,823 posts)...he bends the reality of losing and calls it a win. Or he denies against all contradicting fact that he lost or that the results weren't exactly what he wanted. That's the way his ego rolls.

Living in the Cleveland area, I will hunker down that week and avoid any contact with any of them.

(67,088 posts)what might happen. Many of his supports IMO have the potential to be quite violent. Same here, I would go nowhere near it or any of them. They're likely to shoot/fight someone, whatever, for no reason just because they might be pissed off if things don't go their way.

(31,374 posts)Trump will withdraw for health reasons.
Paul Ryan will be the nominee.
charlyvi
(6,537 posts)Though I forgot to mention him. I think Republicans think he's the only one who could replace Trump without the base rebelling. Of course, I also think they'd be wrong.

(6,537 posts)If the polls in October look like losses in landslide territory, would his ego be able to endure that. Or would he develop an extremely bad
dire health problem and have to withdraw, thereby saving face and a loser label.

(11,905 posts)Considering the republican "clientelle", they'll probably try to set up one of the debates as a girl-on-girl mud wrestling contest.

How could anyone be creepier than Scott. I hope Trump picks him!

(3,072 posts)I would still say he is the most likely person to get the nomination but I would say there is maybe a 30% chance they finally put their foot down and pick someone else. His approval ratings are historically low, he is down by near double digits in the polls, solid red states like Kansas and Utah are now in play, he refuses to raise any money for the party, and now he is attacking the republicans as weak and demands that they bow down to him, without question. One or two more weeks of behavior like this and the RNC may decide that enough is enough and perform a coup at the convention.

(24,692 posts)They may well be stupid (in this case republican primary voters certainly are) but you can't run a political party long term making it very obvious that you have absolutely no respect for your parties base.
