Well, shit. Killer of MP, Jo Cox, had longstanding ties to U.S. neo-Nazi Group

The man detained by police in connection with the killing of a rising star of British politics had longstanding ties to a U.S.-based neo-Nazi organization and, in the past, had ordered a how-to guide for assembling a homemade gun, according to a watchdog group that tracks extremist behavior.

The revelation came as police on Friday continued to investigate the motive behind the killing of the British lawmaker, Jo Cox, who was stabbed and shot midday Thursday in an attack that stunned the nation and led to a suspension of the European Union referendum campaign just a week before the vote. Cox had been a strong advocate of an inclusive and multicultural Britain amid a wave of hostility toward immigrants that is helping to fuel the anti-E.U. campaign.

Cox’s suspected killer was not named by police but was identified in the British media as 52-year-old Tommy Mair, a local resident whom neighbors described as quiet and devoted to his mother. Family members said that Mair had never expressed strong political views, but that he had an obsessive personality. He was arrested shortly after the attack.

According to documents obtained by the Southern Poverty Law Center, the U.S.-based organization that tracks extremist groups, Mair was a long-time supporter of the National Alliance, a once-prominent white supremacist group. In 1999, Mair bought a manual from the organization that included instructions on how to build a pistol, the center said.

1. "Cox had been a strong advocate of an inclusive and multicultural Britain amid a wave of hostility

toward immigrants that is helping to fuel the anti-E.U. campaign."

Officials have not commented on a possible motive for the killing. But British media organizations including the Guardian, the BBC and Sky News quoted witnesses as saying that the assailant shouted “Britain first!” during and after the attack.

Britain First is the name of a far-right group that stages provocative anti-Muslim demonstrations. After Thursday's attack, the organization posted a statement on its website denying involvement and saying it “would never encourage behavior of this sort.”

People from around the world on Thursday and Friday paid tribute to the 41-year-old Cox, a politician from the center-left Labour party who was widely-respected across the political spectrum for her fierce advocacy on behalf of Syrian war victims and who campaigned to allow 3,000 child refugees to resettle in Britain. Before her election to Parliament last year, Cox had a career in humanitarian work. In Parliament, Cox had been outspoken about the need to do more to protect civilians in Syria, and had argued in the House of Commons for Britain to accept 3,000 child refugees.

“Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people,” he (her husband) wrote. “She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now, one that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her. Hate doesn’t have a creed, race or religion, it is poisonous.”

It sounds like the world lost a true liberal at the hands of a right wing nationalist.

yes, we did.

I'm not sure how we stop it, but at this rate "true liberals" will be headed for extinction.

7. No, the sad truth is that these hateful assholes are perfectly sane.

Calling them mentally ill is very stigmatizing to those of us with mental illnesses.

6. Hmmm . . . . doesn't that qualify as international terrorism?

Oh wait, it couldn't possibly be international terrorism, he's a white guy from the UK who associated with white guys from the US, that doesn't qualify, I almost forgot myself there for a second.

9. Association versus coordination and conspiracy.

If somebody from DU goes and does something truly bad that could be called terrorism, you're associated with that person. You'e "linked" or "associated" with terrorism. I've had contact with the police but that doesn't make me a cop.

Those are weasel words because they say nothing but "you know the people or organization and have had contact with it."

It doesn't mean DU or anybody else helped coordinate or plan. For that we need evidence of, well, more than just a "link."

Even if the person bought something from a DU-sponsored "store" that helped fund DU, it wouldn't qualify if anybody could order.

10. UK is very used to white terrorists. Think about it.

Most of their history of terrorism involved Irish politics. The UK is not the US.

15. Does suspension of the referendum campaign help or hurt the vote?

I would hope this tragedy hurts the right's vote. If so, maybe someone will tell Mair while he rots in prison when the Brexit referendum fails and Britain remains in the EU.

16. "Feels like 1938."

According to several panelists on France24 during a discussion that included this interesting Brexit advertisement and its Nazi counterpart:

UKIP............................................Nazi propaganda film

Farage is using EU refugees to scaremonger exactly like the Nazis used Jews to scaremonger.
