(1,067 posts)That dog is not stressed, he's focused. Chesapeake's are a hunting breed. He is waiting for the ball to be thrown so he can retrieve it, it's what they do. Watch a hunting dog on point sometime, they lock up and stay absolutely still until the bird flushes, it's not due to stress or anxiety, it's how they are wired.

(43,666 posts)Our Golden of years past, Joe, would scare the life out of me trying to get not only his ball but every one in the slough we used to take him to.He'd swim and swim and swim, grabbing and herding and snorting. But he was having the time of his life and the water wasn't so deep we couldn't get him out if he needed it, which of course he never did.

It's not that he is socially awkward, it's that he has a different set of priorities than a golden retriever or lab.
