"(Y)ou're not really anybody in America unless you're on TV."

Quote from 1995 movie "To Die For".

The Orlando nightclub shooter may have been motivated by hatred of GLBT, by self-hate, by being an imagined martyr on behalf of ISIL. What I haven't heard addressed is like TDF, he was motivated by taking extreme violent means to be recognized. According to media reports, he had a past starting in school with discipline problems, progressing to arrests, etc.

The fact that he took pause during his massacre to call a television station, to google Orlando and shooting to see if anyone was talking about him yet, and to call 911 to make sure that someone knew what he was doing demonstrates how dependent he was media and social media to validate himself.

It was not done for ISIL. It was done for himself.
