Two days after the worst mass shooting in American history, and my local gun shop in Virginia showed no hesitation in selling me an AR-15.
In fact, they really wanted me to buy it. And I was only there for five minutes.

As I was watching CNN Tuesday morning, I thought it was crazy how the first thing society jumps to after such a tragic event was gun rights. I began to think of how much my hometown loves the Second Amendment, and I wondered exactly how hard it would be for me to walk up and buy a gun. Well, I didnt have anything better to do, so I got in my car and did exactly that.
I walked into the store and told them I was interested in something for home protection and target practice. The woman behind the counter smiled and asked, Rifle or shotgun?

(28,749 posts)I didn't buy a gun today.
I enjoyed my time in an overwhelmingly gay community, spent some time on the beach, went to a tea dance, and just got back from dinner.
But nope, I didn't buy a gun.
Not sure why we need these types of weapons at all, oh wait, we don't.

(23,340 posts)it took about 40 min to go a mile, before the jam cleared. Four lanes going in one direction, drivers changing lanes hoping for a faster way through. I didn't see anyone point a gun (or a fist) at anyone else, didn't hear any horns honking. Slow, but peaceful.
No guns needed. Just patience and courtesy.

We should all try it.

(18,654 posts)since my travels took me to many government buildings where I am not permitted to carry. It was actually less enjoyable than most days but that was due to dealing with bureaucracy, not anything gun related.

(23,340 posts)Filling out the form probably takes most of that time. Then the time for the sales clerk to read the form's information to the NICS processing clerk.
But, the clerk seemed extraordinarily careful, demanding a vehicle registration in addition to photo I.D.
One more legitimate sale. Next, we'll hear how easy it is for this individual to join the NRA.

(23,340 posts)And, his expired identification never really passed any test. I don't know if the expiration date of a driver license is relevant or if the NICS clerk requires that bit of info. It still identifies an individual, it just means he shouldn't be driving.

(5,417 posts)Of course there was no background check. You walked out (without buying anything) before the background check could be processed.

(39,343 posts)You can walk into a gun store and provided it's not crowded, decide to buy a gun in a minute. The paperwork takes a few minutes most times, then there's paying for the item.
Gun store clerks aren't counsellors or anything other than a sales clerk.

(2,337 posts)which I never filled out, the NICS call was never placed, and I never actually bought jack shit!"
Cool story, bro.
The part about "They never even did a background check!" was a nice touch. No shit, Sherlock. You never filled out the form. Glad he decided to pass on it. Far too dumb to be trusted with a firearm.

(6,624 posts)The headine is I was able to buy an AR-15 in five minutes
If you read the article, he didn't actually buy a gun.
He says this:
He didn't have a background check because he didn't actually buy a gun. The clerk gave him the 4473 to fill out, but then the kid backed out of the sale.
The ID is to prove that he is who he says he is. The clerk didn't notice the expiration, but it was a photo ID with corroborating documentation -- his registration.
Right. It took seconds to take the AR off the shelf. They're not that heavy. What does "begin selling it to me" mean? It only takes seconds to "begin" doing anything, even walking around the world backwards on your hands. And his "maybe three minutes longer" is pure speculation because he didn't actually buy a gun.
Except he was not "out in minutes with an AR-15," because he didn't actually buy a gun. He may have walked out with it in five minutes, or ten, or fifteen, or he may have failed the check and not walked out with it at all. We'll never know because he didn't actually buy a gun.
The rifle is legal. Presumably this kid has a clean record. Why are people obsessed with how long it takes to buy a gun? Would they be happier if the NICS system were less efficient? Actually, in his case, the speed of the NICS systems isn't a factor: he didn't have a NICS check because he didn't actually buy a gun.
I hope this kid isn't a journalism major, but I have a sinking feeling that he might be.

(2,337 posts)Are you kidding me? Read some of the awesome suggestions the controllers throw out.
"It should be onerous and difficult! Each gun needs a separate visit to the shrink for the buyer, its own insurance policy, 10 year waiting period, can't be taken out on Sundays, NICS should deny you for parking tickets, bullets should require a mortgage and you'd be limited to 1, unless you hunt, then three, the gun store should only be open from noon to 1 on Wednesday, and the NICS hotline only from 2-3 on Thursday!", or some such.
For some, it's all about denial of rights through hoop-jumping. These folks probably salivate at the idea of 3 kinds of ID voting requirements and literacy tests.
Denial through inconvenience is one of the oldest and dearest controller fantasies.

Yeah... it's not a criminal act or big issue, but at least pull your head out of your ass and take the time to
renew your DL before you set about your crusade.

Peace.
I mowed my lawn in two minutes today. It took me that long to figure that it's too hot, and it's not going to rain, so the grass won't grow, so the mowing can wait until the weather cools down next week. Mission accomplished.

(6,624 posts)They make a manager come and oversee the process. The last time I bought a gun at Wal-Mart, they paged the guy and he didn't even show up for half an hour. Then he insisted on putting a trigger lock on the gun (a CZ .22 rifle) even though the bolt wasn't installed. The guy couldn't get it right -- he was looking like he was going to scratch my new rifle, so I had to put the trigger lock on myself. Then there was the "walk of shame," where you follow the manager as he carries your gun out of the store and hands it to you in the parking lot. I've always wondered why they do that.
I'm no longer willing to put up with that just to get a cheaper price.

(8,976 posts)The hide above me called the OP a lie-which it is. It is titled "I was able to buy an AR15 in 5 minutes" which in fact he did not and could not have done-he had in fact been in the store longer then that and left without making any purchase. (34,170 posts)If he is not a prohibited person and didn't present any red flags, I'm fine with an expeditious sale.
What should the sales person due? Talk to him about the weather for 15 minutes? 30? 60?
Talk about religion? Talk about his sexual orientation? Talk about his racial heritage? Talk about his politics?
What the hell do anti-gunners want of a sale of a long gun to a person who isn't prohibited from buying one?

*I walked out before he could administer the exam. The person just told me to have a nice day and did not give me a liscense. Apparently he should have tackled me, tied me to the seat and forced me to take the test.
