And isn't an end to all surprise birthday parties a small price to pay for a lifetime full of paranoia?

4. Damn

I am a gun person, to be sure.
And I believe every home should have a pump shotgun
and a pistol and that every family member should learn
how to shoot accurately and handle
a gun safely.
And while the AR-15 is an excellent shooting 'platform' -
this guy is whacked.

I don't own a gun. I don't even know where the key to my front door is. I never lock it. Not even when I go away.

12. On two occasions I have found a gun helpful

Both times a crime was stopped by the sound of chambering a
round in a pump shotgun. It is quite a deterrent. Better to have and not need
than to need and not have.

13. On two occasions I have had to hold on to hand guns

owned by suicidal people.

Last year, my ex-brother-in-law, someone I counted as a friend long after my marriage ended, shot himself in the head.

I live in Vermont which has very few gun laws and the lowest gun murder rate per 100,000 in the nation. Alas, it has a very high rate of gun death by suicide.

5. like mowing

It'll mow down the robbers; It'll mow down the gangs;
It'll mow down the immigrants with so many bangs.
It'll mow down intruders and lay 'em out flat
It'll mow down the neighbors; It'll mow down their cat.
It'll mow down your hedges; It'll mow down your walls.
It'll mow down so much it's like having three balls.
It'll mow down the last traces of your insecurity.
In December it'll mow down a whole Christmas tree.
With an A.K. or an A.R. or a SIG Sauer set
The mow that you want then the mow that you'll get.

17. I would disagree

too few shots and people overestimate how much the shot will spread. You have to aim like you would a rifle at a close target. Might as well have a rifle in that case.

31. They make semi-auto shotguns that help reduce recoil, they also make lighter

rounds like a 20 gauge and the .410 that have less recoil. I was able to hunt with a 12 gauge shotgun when I was 12 years old.

39. When the second shot hits the ceiling...

you know there's too much recoil.

But seriously, too much recoil is dangerous. In the late 70s at during the 44 Magnum craze fueled by Dirty Harry, my neighbor below put a hole in my floor when he accidentally fired a revolver twice when he meant to fire once. The burglar wasn't hit by either bullet, but knocked himself out after trying to run in the dark after his night vision was ruined. The SPD took the revolver, and last I heard when the guy moved out of state, he thankfully hadn't gotten it back.

25. Depends on the shotgun. Some of the newer designs such as the Kel-Tec KSG and USAS-15

hold 14 rounds.

people overestimate how much the shot will spread. You have to aim like you would a rifle at a close target.

Quite so. I can't count the number of times I've seen people assert that you don't have to aim a shotgun, just point it in the general direction and you'll magically hit the target.

Might as well have a rifle in that case.

Well, 12 Ga. 00 buckshot does have a wee bit more stopping power than 5.56x45....so there's that in its favor.

I'd call both a 12 Ga. shotgun (pump or semi, in a defense configuration) or a modern sporting rifle a perfectly valid choice for home defense.

weapon in that case then you don't need to aim just kill everyone including yourself.

I tried to explain that the US is basically an island and that any potential enemy (excluding the possibility of us being invaded by either Canada or Mexico) has a bleeding ocean to cross and there is no way a Normandy style invasion of the continental US would ever succeed.

No shifting him in the least

Like somebody running around with an AR-15 gunning unsuspecting people down in movie theaters, dance clubs and maybe somebody in your neighborhood that is a paranoid lunatic.

Surely the only solution is for all of us to have an AR-15 that we carry with us everywhere at all times!

30. This ain't Baghdad? Tell me just how a homeowner would

require an AR-15 to defend his family. What are you going to be attacked by 10 people or what? If someone enters your home to rob you or whatever you have the right to defend yourself you are going to be at close range where an AR-15 would be a disadvantage. A 12 ga. pump or semi auto shotgun would be far better and it is very unlikely if you do fire that anyone in another room or next door is going to be killed. That argument is ridiculous.

36. How would someone using an AR-15 be at a disadvantage when defending their home?

I can understand someone arguing that it's too much firepower for civilians (I'd disagree vehemently, mind you), but I can't see how a homeowner could plausibly think, "Dammit! My house is being invaded and all I have to defend myself with is this AR-15. I might as well be shooting spitwads. If only I had a shotgun!".

Both an AR-15 and a shotgun (in a defense configuration) make perfectly good home defense weapons.

44. It depends on the particular loads used. Some 5.56mm ammo from an AR-15 will penetrate less

than buckshot from a shotgun. Birdshot will not penetrate much, but that's not an effective self defense load.

One needs to tailor one's home defense weapon to the situation at hand, in any case.

46. If I had my 5.56x45 AR with a 10-rd mag, my 9mm XDM with a 10-rd mag, or my shotgun with 10 rounds,

and I had to confront a home intruder, I would prefer the AR for reliability, accuracy, and terminal ballistics.

I know that might sounds crazy, but most AR rifle rounds are always going to hit harder and due more damage than pistol rounds. ARs are more reliable and accurate functionally. I know from my range time that if I'm not concentrating, muzzle flipping can lead to stovepiping. With shotguns you may have a 5" spread at 10 feet and 10" spread at 20 feet depending on ammo.

There are downsides to the AR. A 5.56 round will penetrate more walls than 9mm or 00 if you miss. AR is longer than a pistol, but typically shorter than a shotgun.
