Then I decided DU admins must want to signal a cease fire by stopping the noise when many are paying attention, could be smart.
But for an ad-driven site it is risky. Hopefully they have alerted the search crawlers in robots.txt or google webmaster panel and Adsense etc.
There is of course always the risk that even though you tested everything 9 times on a development server, one squicky line in your Apache config file or SQL databases makes the whole thing go pear shaped and you're offline all afternoon trying to figure out why CentOS is letting you down, chainsmoking in the server closet, pulling out your beard and worrying about your backup strategy.
Shit happens in live production. Almost always.
