(1,512 posts)It's pretty obvious... and pretty sad.

(58,785 posts)control, the GOP leadership is in full meltdown, totally out of control of the presidential election process and hemorrhaging both membership and power to outside power centers, and the Libertarians are doing their best to draw off millions of disaffected conservatives.
The Democrats are organized, with message and purpose, and more monolithic than we've ever been in spite of the anger of a minority of SBSers over losing the primary.

(36,063 posts)It always boils down to looking for a category of people who can be acted against.
I'd think acting to control gun sales to terrorists would be a perfect approach. Compared to gun sales in general, sales to terrorists are small when considered industry wide so it's a low cost option for the industry.
AND they get to exploit a category of people who may also be quite small but who are universally despised.

(2,125 posts)What kinds of activities might get any one of us on that Universally-Despised list? An anti-war march?
A LTTE that sounds angry? An overheard joke about some high-ranking pedophile Senator?

(36,063 posts)Of course, choosing to be politically deviant from what is obviously the healthy mainstream has frequently been used as evidence of mental illness in authoritarian states.
That's why Western psych industry doesn't base diagnoses simply on deviant beliefs or behaviors.

(5,554 posts)If we can't get anything good passed, we could have at least supported the Pubs weak ass background check system improvements. While they don't do enough they are better than nothing (if there was a poison pill on them that I missed, please call it out)
There is a time for bipartisanship, and I think this was one of them. Even a watered down improvement of the background check system might have saved a few lives.
I never expected the clowns to support our bills, but I had some hope that our people could look past the infighting and back something that would be even a small benefit

(11,619 posts)84% of Americans want background checks. That includes Republicans.

Bipartisanship requires that both sides want something. It was clear that only what the NRA wanted mattered.
Now the bills were not actually defeated. They could not pass a cloture vote to bring them to the floor.
Our government requires compromise. Sadly in this partisan world compromise is a dirty word.

What better way to help out 2 of America's greatest institutions. Guns & Religion.
Wait for some whack job to get a gun and then kill 10+ people. Wait....not enough anymore. It takes 20+ to get any thoughts and prayers nowadays.
Don't forget to follow up those prayers with donations to your favorite religious organization.
GOD Bless America. GOD Bless Guns.

(21,056 posts)Taking back house and senate. Bring back the civil rights act. Guarantee everyone who is a citizen the right to vote. Make it easier and get rid of those damn rigged machines. We can vote for assault weapons bans and background checks. Offer gun buy back programs. Campaign finance reforms.
It could happen. I want to be optimistic and dream of a better America.
Just think, infrastructure programs, restructure students loans or do some forgiveness. Tax the hell out of Wall Street and tax capital gains at higher rates with exemption for any increase in gains under 1 million. So many things that could be done if we only had a congress who's willing to flip off the corporate greedy republican/ corporate dems.

(11,330 posts)organization like Gun Sense in America are learning to flex some muscle.
They have stopped a couple of dozen bills in state legislatures.
They will eventually work with other groups and we will have reasonable gun control measures.

(1,098 posts)Figure out how to get rid of those hundreds of millions of guns - not in terms of outlawing them legally but actually removing them physically - and then there might finally be some gun control.

(82,849 posts)Put a deadline on it, and if you're caught with one of the prohibited weapons after that, you lose the gun, some money, and your liberty for a prescribed period. Australia did it. We can do it. It's not magic.
