FBI: Indiana teen attempted to join Islamic State

INDIANAPOLIS (AP and WLWT) -
FBI agents arrested an 18-year-old from suburban Indianapolis as he tried to board a bus to New York and join the Islamic State terror group overseas, federal authorities said Tuesday.

Akram Musleh of Brownsburg was arrested without incident, FBI spokeswoman Special Agent Wendy Osborne said.

Musleh was in the custody of federal marshals at an undisclosed location, spokesman Tim Horty of the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Musleh made his initial appearance Tuesday in U.S. District Court to hear a charge of providing material support to the Islamic State against him, Horty said. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a lifetime of supervised release and a $250,000 fine if convicted, prosecutors said. Musleh has a detention hearing scheduled for Monday.

Court documents said he first told investigators that he was going to visit family. He then said he was going to get married.
FBI officials learned that while he had no family in Turkey, he did have an alleged fiancee living in Sweden, who officials believe is an ISIS sympathizer.I'm
