Or single payer health care? Or any one of a dozen causes that will save far more lives than banning protruding pistol grips?

Goddamnit, this is such cover for their lack of action on things that are really important!

Social and economic programs do so much more to reduce crime rates than the proposed laws would. Not only reducing crime, but increasing education, health, self-achievement, etc.

It's pandering. Even if the laws passed, any good they would do would be way overshadowed by the harm done by GOPers in more state legislatures and governor mansions, not to mention the Federal stuff.

"Assault weapons" are a subset of rifles (usually, although they can be also shotguns or pistols), and all rifles COMBINED account for something less than 5% of all murders annually.

If they were serious about "saving lives", they'd outlaw handguns. If they were serious about banning "assault weapons", they'd ban all semiautomatic longs guns (rifles and shotguns) WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

Some people think they can lock gun technology back to 1910. And they're wrong.

..in Congress without having to coordinate with OWS.

Instead, they treated OWS like it was Ebola. I would have loved to see Obama send in federal marshals to protect the Occupiers from the NYPD, for example.

Would the Federal Marshal service have to prevent the NYPD from evicting the protesters from private property? Or public property if it violated city ordinances. Like shitting in public. That freaky chanting and repeating stuff turned off most who saw it.

Again I say, good cause, horrible tactics. But what do expect from an event put on by anarchists.

Had Obama sent in the Marshal Service, president Romney would be running for his second term now.

... bans on "assault weapons" are doomed to be useless. Remember, the rifle used at Sandy Hook was not an "assault weapon"... Connecticut had had a ban in effect since '92.

People that want a rifle for self-defense purposes (or a shotgun, or a handgun) are going to have one with all the "tactical-cool" bells and whistles allowed and that they think are needed. For example, several companies are now making pump-action AR-15-type rifles. They use the same barrels, magazines, triggers, optics, mounting hardware, buttstocks, pistol grips, etc., but the gas action has been replaced with a shotgun-type pump.

Regardless of how much it makes people unhappy, the idea of pistol grips over traditional grips, black plastic over stained walnut, gun-mounted flashlights and lasers, optics over iron sights, and flat-black metal finish instead of traditional blueing is here to stay.

WHATEVER people use for self defense will have these things because they are superior to the "old/traditional" way of doing things.

If you restricted long-guns to break-actions only, people will own all-black double-barreled shotguns with lasers, tactical flashlights, ammo carriers on the gun, automatic empty-shell ejectors, and pistol grips.

Don't you get it? It's the target and the shooter, not the hardware.

You have a guy hell-bent on a body count, and his target is unarmed, helped people trapped in a building.

Orlando, Sandy Hook, Colorado movie theater, San Bernardino, Virginia Tech, Columbine, South Carolina church... See any pattern there?

Random people trapped in a box. Helpless, unarmed, untrained, surprised, and panicked. At that point, pretty much any gun made in the last 120 years will guarantee a slaughter as long as the shooter is determined and reasonably competent.

But it will motivate people to go to the polls and vote for the damn Republicans despite how enormous an asshole Trump is.

It's not just Trump, it's the down-ticket assholes, too. The ones turning Kansas into a free-market hellhole and Mississippi into a no-abortion zone.

Any measure that lessens the sheer number of unsecured weapons is progress. And if it prevents one child from harm it's worth it. Anything that these Congress critters do is better than nothing which is what they normally do. To accuse OWS of rejecting help from a congressman seems dubious. I don't believe that. Also true that they should have been protesting for single payer when they had a chance. They should have stood up for OWS and someone should have cared when they literally stole our SS trust fund. They took our money and gave it to the wall Street crooks who lost it so we had to bail them out and you know what , they still are doing the same stuff now. That they don't care about.

We had an assault weapons ban called the Brady bill fromm1984 until the shrub allowed it to expire in 2004. ( Don't think that the political coup that made shrub the President did not have anything to do with that ban expiring ,it had everything to do with it) The supreme Court has ruled that the public may not posses military grade weapons. The second amendment not withstanding you cannot own a cannon, a missile a hand grenade. You can't have a machine gun an automatic weapon. The assault weapons are automatic weapons. They may be single shot automatic weapons but they are automatic weapons. They should not be sold to general public people.
Smart weapon technology is coming , fight progress all you like , progress always wins. Its undefeated. 30 day waiting periods are going to be the law. We must take this issue seriously. It past time to take the NRA on.
