The Latest: Lawyers Will Seek to Have Gun Evidence Tossed
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS JERSEY CITY, N.J. Jun 22, 2016, 1:41 PM ET
The Latest on three people arrested with a cache of guns at the Holland Tunnel (all times local):
1:30 p.m.
Attorneys for three Pennsylvania residents facing numerous charges after weapons were found inside a van stopped outside New York City say they will seek to have the evidence thrown out.
The attorneys for John Cramsey, of Zionsville, 53-year-old Dean Smith, of Whitehall, and 29-year-old Kimberly Arendt, of Lehighton, argued Wednesday the search that uncovered the weapons Tuesday in New Jersey was illegal.
The three pleaded not guilty. A Hudson County judge declined to give them the option of paying 10 percent of their $75,000 cash bail.
A law enforcement official told The Associated Press one of the people said they were headed to Brooklyn on Tuesday to "rescue" a teenage girl. The official wasn't authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

(62,444 posts)2. Yep, but it's kind of uphill
It's one thing to pull over a car for a cracked windshield, and then use that as a pretext to search the trunk.
It's quite another thing to pull over a car for a cracked windshield, and then see whatever is in plain view.

(10,201 posts)3. True. But step one is usually have evidence dismissed.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)5. Oh, of course
One theme in the background here is the idea that the employee was looking for a reason to pull them over.

this week's supreme court decisions? The cops can stop anyone anywhere now.

(838 posts)7. Why they had the guns
According to the Daily Beast: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/06/21/gun-nuts-drove-monster-truck-to-nyc-to-rescue-heroin-addict.html
The men were on a self-appointed vigilante mission to rescue a heroin addict. Make of that what you will.
