Will those who support Bernie (I mean we all do really) switch/side with Trump?

(72,790 posts)It's cool either way. I'm not in the business to tell folks how to vote. They should vote how they want to.

(58,440 posts)Bernie voters, while yeah they love the "outsider" aspect of his candidacy, also support a long list of policies that Bernie has been fighting for over many years. I suspect that they will still support those policies, and realize that voting for Trump would only move the realization of any of those farther away.
Trump supporters seem to want the "outsider" aspect of let's go in and burn this baby down. I don't see as much common ground as many seem to see in this. Most of the people I hear saying Trump will get significant support from disillusioned Bernie supporters are Trump supporters engaging in wishful thinking. Hillary is far from being as liberal as the RW echo chamber likes to claim, but she's certainly not as far right as some of the Bernie supporters were trying to say either. Yeah, we hate to go back to "let's at least slow down the drift to the right" mode, but it's far better than the headlong rush to the right that the Repubs advocate. Bernie-ites may shy away from Clinton a bit, but I don't see a significant number of them switching that far to the dark side.
In a normal election, when the focus is on issues, Dems can win. If Trump and the media switch the emphasis to personality and celebrity we might get into trouble. Thankfully, Trump has shown no real character so far. You can see him trying to change that now, I guess, but how long can he stick to reading from a script he doesn't really believe in. He has celebrity, but how many people can he convince that he's that "guy you want to have a beer with?" The implication, in Bush's case, was that he would like to have that beer with you too, reciprocity. I don't see any of that in Trump.

If Trump were Rmoney or somebody else semi moderate; maybe....but not Trump, he's nuts.

(23,220 posts)I have one friend who stated that he would consider voting for Trump. I do not personally believe that he would do that. We shall see in November.

(3,040 posts)Those that supported a democratic candidate that didn't win the primaries says they won't vote for the winner, but they end up voting for the candidate that received the nomination come November.
Hillary supporters in 2008 said they would never vote for Obama, but they did vote for him in the end.

(23,856 posts)i don't think the portion of voters who would switch from SBS to DJT is substantial enough to "woo", per se. that'd be squeezing blood from a stone, and i think even trump has to know it by now. but if DJT can convince them that HRC is so awful that they can't vote for her, he can reap some benefit, and it's a much easier sell.

(21,691 posts)It wasn't Sanders's so-called "outsider" thing that appealed to them; it was the common sense and the strong scent of liberal policies. Those voters would run a mile in tight shoes to vote for (almost) anyone but Trump.

(11,481 posts)I DO expect a solid percentage to go to the Greens and there are even some true socialist parties running candidates that will probably have their best general election ever. Of course that's not saying much. But the Greens? Yeah, I've said before they will also have their best election day ever. I'm guestimating between 5 and 10% for the Greens.

(3,660 posts)None who follow or care about politics, with I suppose the exception of the handful who buy the insane "tear it all down at once so we can set up a whole new system which of course will be a collectivist, co-operative equitable and just system even though no sudden political upheaval in history has ever produced this" idea. He may pick up a small percentage who just mindlessly follow the "outsider" and think affected jaded cynicism about politicians is a substitute for genuine insight.
