He was there in the streets, in the deep south doing the hard, real dangerous work of social justice. He was a freedom rider, and later worked with Carter running VISTA. He was participating in anti-war protests against the Iraq War in 2003, arrested at the Sudan Embassy protesting the genocide, and was one of eight U.S. Representatives, from six states, arrested while holding a sit-in near the west side of the U.S. Capitol building, to advocate for illegal immigration reform.

Jail isn't some cozy, cushioned, air conditioned seat in the House or the Senate, but John Lewis was willing to go there to bring attention to an issue.
This time his action was inspired by the Orlando shootings, and not the Democratic primaries.
No one has fought like John Lewis.
And no matter how plush the carpet, or air conditioned the room, some people couldn't be bothered to do more than stop by and get a photo op. Elizabeth Warren, on the other hand was there with them.
You seem to be unaware of John Lewis's record on the issues.
Here it is, and it is long and impressive. And we had John Lewis before we had Bernie Sanders, and we will have more people like John Lewis in the future. Just like there have been progressive Democrats here on DU way longer than you. Don't worry.

YEAR 2013: Rep. John Lewis adds arrest # 45 - after Peaceful SIT-IN Capitol ~ in 2013
2013
According to Lewis' office, the civil rights icon was arrested at approximately 4:15 p.m. Buzzfeed reports that Lewis and fellow Congressmen Joe Crowley, Raul Grijalva, Luis Gutierrez, Jan Schakowsky, Keith Ellison, Al Green, Charlie Rangel joined more than 100 activists and started a "peaceful sit-in blocking a street in the front of the Capitol." The protest was part of the Camino Americano Rally for Immigrant Dignity and Respect, an effort to restart immigration reform in Congress.
Lewis has been placed in handcuffs "at least" 45 times, his spokeswoman says. He was arrested more than 40 times during the Civil Rights Movement. Since serving in Congress, he's been arrested five times.
"He was arrested twice at the South African embassy protesting apartheid, twice at the Embassy of the Sudan protesting genocide in Darfur and today he was arrested to demand dignity and respect for immigrants," his office said.

Maybe you ought to take a trip down memory lane. Democrats lining up to vote for the Patriot Act. Our current nominee supporting all of Bush's lies on the senate floor. Harry Reid "keeping the powder dry." Nancy Pelosi "taking impeachment off the table." Kerry not challenging Ohio. President obama putting social security "on the table."
Democrats do have a record of backing down against the right wing. We have this problem where out leader fetishize "bipartisanship" and an attitude of "going along to get along." Pointing that out isn't a lie, and it's not slander. It's the fucking truth. Which is why it's so nice to see instances like this where they stand up (so to speak) for what's right, even if it means they're off Mitch McConnel's Christmas card list.

Yeah, wow is about the only thing I can say to that without getting my post hidden.

(6,444 posts)According to Lewis' office, the civil rights icon was arrested at approximately 4:15 p.m.

(1,214 posts)I don't think it was a direct link between Sanders campaign, or that Sanders inspired him.
I do think that Sanders campaign did get traction showed that our nation really isn't "center-right" like some of our party members try to use as an excuse for being slightly less awful than republicans.
LongtimeAZDem
(4,494 posts)Trying to give credit to anyone other than those who actually took action is unsupported nonsense, and nothing more than a cheap attempt to find political validation in the works of others.
That Guy 888
(1,214 posts)It seems to me that the Democratic Party leadership is finally allowing our party members to take action in part because they realize it's going to be more difficult to just sit on their hands and do nothing because of republican intransigence.
If Sanders campaign had gone the route of Dennis Kucinich's, I'm sure that this sit in would have had the rug pulled out from under it by the self proclaimed "adults" in our party who only want safe easy victories.
LongtimeAZDem
(4,494 posts)OK, you want to give somebody else credit? Try this.
Clinton met with House Democrats this morning, greeted by cheers of "Hillary, Hillary!" A short time later, they started their sit-in.
If one of the candidates influenced their action, it was far more likely that it was the one they just rallied with.
I don't believe it, of course; I believe the credit goes to the Democratic Men and Women of the House of Representatives, first and foremost the Honorable John Lewis. But you can tell yourself whatever you want.
That Guy 888
(1,214 posts)They didn't allow a vote on impeaching * because it wouldn't have been successful. The powers-that-be in the Democratic Party had decided that doing nothing was the best course of action.
Why was there a change? Why didn't they shut this down? Why not allow this sort of action following any of our other mass shootings? What has changed?
As apparently can the "uniters" among Clinton supporters.

(4,762 posts)He is slightly more pro-gun than most liberal Dems because he represents a rural state. But overall he has supported reasonable gun laws and I think has a "D" rating from the NRA.
I'm a Hillary supporter and have been very critical of the Sanders campaign in recent months but let's be fair and see that we all have much more in common than separates us.
But this thing is about John Lewis and the other folks sitting there risking their necks.
Squinch
(50,949 posts)He voted against the Brady bill and waiting periods, voted for immunity for gun sellers, voted to allow guns in bags on Amtrak. Yes, though, he does support background checks and he supports getting rid of the gun show loophole, on which I agree with him. But he is not a dependable supporter of gun control.
rjsquirrel
(4,762 posts)But I suspect rising on the national stage may have bent Bernie in the right direction on this issue-- it was one of few issues where Hillary held his feet to the fire, and here hernia showing up for the fight.
I agree that his Brady Bill vote was disappointing, more so for the way it proves he is a professional politician. His constituents include Rural Vermonters just like Hillary's included Wall St bankers when she was senator.
In other ways it is important to have middle-grounders who understand amd have some trust from rural and pro-gun constituencies to combat the NRA. As a rural Texan by birth and upbringing (grew up hunting, in other words) I think most rational hunters and gun owners support a lot of rational control measures -- which surveys show is true for closing the gunshow loophole and expanding background checks at least.
Pat Toomey and Joe Manchin and Susan Collins are all folks I think we can get and need to get on the good side here.
I guess I'm trying to find common ground on this issue. I think we are all sick of NRA polarizing rhetoric.

(6,444 posts)According to Lewis' office, the civil rights icon was arrested at approximately 4:15 p.m.

(19,581 posts)It wasn't his idea. I am pleased he is supporting this action, but not everything the Dems do is contributible to Sander's. He has voted against gun measures in the past. And, Clinton has championed restricting access to guns .

(11,076 posts)Your comments only serve to push people away from Clinton. Good work. I would love a link to Hillary's support to restricting access. To be clear, the civil conversation here only works if everyone complies. Let's work together.

(19,581 posts)Praising him and crediting him for someone else's efforts is wrong. Educating a few people on the facts, is important. I don't get your point about Clinton. I was not saying she had anything to do with this either.I was simply pointing out their voting records and opinions on this issue. Sorry you don't like it, but facts are facts.

(11,076 posts)I am aware of his great work and so happy that he took it to the floor. I am certain that Senator Sander's is also proud and thankful for all that Representative Lewis does to make this world a better place. It is a pity that Sander's had to be brought into this at all. These are two fine people. Not cool to demean either of them.

Solve this problem by keeping Bernie out of it! Talk to the poster about your issue. Use words of understanding and then maybe we can all come closer to getting along. Be the first to step forward!
I hope you have an awesome day! Life is so short to waste it!

John Lewis made this happen. Which will lead to further inspirations.
Bernie amplified the growing awareness of the corruption of democratic process, and the assault on the rest of us by the $$$ elite.
President Obama leads by being a consistent example of right intention, compassion for real people, intelligence, hard work, and integrity, and inspired the movement among people to take action on issues.
Not that we didn't before him, but during the chimpy years, people had gotten pretty close to giving up.
