Students wearing, displaying Confederate flag sparks concerns at Canton Central (NY)

CANTON Canton Central School District officials were urged Thursday night to enact policies that would prohibit students from wearing or displaying images that could be considered racist such as the Confederate flag.
The concerns follow the resignation submitted several weeks ago by Austin Weakfall, a black Canton high school social studies teacher. In September, Mr. Weakfall will be starting a teaching position at Heuvelton Central School District where he previously taught.
Dozens of teachers crowded into the high school library Thursday, showing support for a prepared statement read by Kristen J. Ames, co-president of the Canton Central Teachers Association.
