(36,745 posts)This was a non-binding referendum.
If the PM and the parliament don't invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, then all stays as it is right now.
I suspect Britain will negotiate for associate member status and get it. That fits the British much better anyway.

(1,975 posts)That I saw a headline ticker last night before bed that the PM invoked Article 50.

(36,745 posts)He doesn't want anything to do with it.
As much as the Eurocrats want to bluster and bitch about the whole affair, if the UK does not invoke Article 50 they are still in the EU. The referendum was non-binding, so the choice on Article 50 is up to the next PM and Parliament.

(7,238 posts)because for some reason I hadn't seen sarisataka's Brustkidding above, so now I look like a ripoff merchant.
Oh well.
Now waiting for a pedant to pop up and say we haven't actually left yet, to complete my embarrassment.
I think I'm safer signing off and drinking that beer. It's not going to drink itself. Cheersh!

(8,303 posts)They do have two years according to Article 50, and that time line does not begin until the government notifies the EU of the proceeding. I suppose technically if the government did not act on the referendum, EU rules would keep the UK in the EU.
